Close Calls in Cass County: Three Mailboxes Planted with Explosives

CASS COUNTY, MO - The Cass County Sheriff’s Department is trying to find out who has been putting homemade explosives inside mailboxes in Raymore. So far, three homes have been targeted.

In one of those instances, the victim says the explosive had so much power that it blew the mailbox off its post and twisted the metal like aluminum foil.
Understandably shaken by the July 27 explosion, Jimmy Long now gets his mail from a P.O. box, just to be safe.

“It’s a little inconvenience for sure, but it will give us a little peace of mind actually by having it in there”, said Long.

Unfortunately, Long is not alone. Kenneth Morrison’s mailbox was also blown up. He doesn’t allow his wife to get the mail anymore.

“They don’t realize the dangers of people going out to check their mail and be surprised with something like that,” says Morrison.

The U.S. Postal Service is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the person or people responsible for putting the explosive devices inside the mailboxes.

Sheriffs Discuss Most Common Threats

SPRINGFIELD, MO - Sheriffs from more than 100 Missouri counties are meeting in Springfield this week.
It's part of the annual Missouri Sheriff's Association training conference.

Speakers from around the country will talk with sheriffs about different threats, and how to handle them.

Those threats include terrorism, dealing with PTSD and one of the biggest threats, which affects kids - school violence.

"Kids are more likely to die by school violence than any other way at school combined," says Col. Dave Grossman (ret.), one of the conference speakers.
"The numbers have increased, and last year we had a new record for the most violent deaths in the school."

Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster is also speaking to the Sheriff's conference.

The conference started Sunday, and runs through Thursday.

All of the sheriffs will be recognized at the Ozark Empire Fair Tuesday night.

Crash Friday Afternoon Causes I-49 to Temporarily Close

Around 4:30pm Friday afternoon Missouri State Highway Patrol along with Cass County Sheriff's Department responded to a 1 vehicle accident on Northbound I-49 at Mile Marker 171.4 in Cass County.

The accident occurred when the Toyota driven by Luke Sibert 18, of Peculiar Missouri was traveling Northbound on I-49 swerved into the right lane traveling into the median and striking the cable which made the car overturn.

Kelly D. Klinksick 33 of, Rockville Missouri was traveling in the Southbound Lanes of I-49 at the time of this wreck and debris from Mr. Sibert's vehicle stuck Klinksick's vehicle as it passed. She was not injured and her vehicle received minor damages

Henry County Deputies Interrupt Burglary

WINDSOR, Mo - On Thursday, June 20, 2013 at approximately 1:38AM Deputy Jordan Stinnett was conducting business checks on Main Street in Windsor, Missouri when he observed a man throw a brick through the front window of a business and then went inside. Deputy Stinnett requested assistance from Cpl. Jason Gillespie.

Once Cpl. Gillespie was on scene, the intruder was confronted by Deputy Stinnett at which time the subject fled out the rear door of the business, where Cpl. Gillespie was waiting. After a short foot chase, the subject was apprehended and taken into custody for burglary, stealing, property damage, resisting arrest, and failure to obey. The subject was identified as Dustin Bailey, age 26 of Sedalia. Bailey was transported to the Henry County Detention Center, where he remains in custody.

3rd Annual Ultimate Horseman's Challenge

BATES COUNTY, Mo - The Bates County Sheriff’s Posse Ultimate Horseman’s Challenge will be July 13th at the Bates County Fairgrounds. This event will be sanctioned by the Ultimate Horseman Challenge Association.

Competitors will compete over several courses with obstacles to show how good their horsemanship skills are. Admission for spectators are is free and concessions will be provided by the Butler Masons and Demolay.

There will be a $80 Entry Fee for the Open Division, a $70 Entry Fee for the Amateur Division, and a $60 Entry Fee for the Colt Division. These divisions will have a 60% Payback.
There will be a $50 Entry Fee for the Novice Division, a $50 Entry Fee for the Classic Division, a $40 Entry Fee for the Youth Division, and a $35 Entry Fee for the Backaroo Divison. These divisions will be awarded trophies, prizes, and ribbons.

The Bates County Sheriff Posse is looking for sponsors for the Ultimate Horseman’s Challenge. Sponsors keep this event free to the community. For $75 be an Obstacle Sponsor for each course and for $200 be a Corporate Course Sponsor. Corporate Course Sponsors are allowed to place banners on the course and come and promote their business at the event. All Sponsors were announced multiple times throughout the event last year by announcers. Those unable to be a sponsor can still donate for horse related items as prizes for the riders that register for the event. Money raised will also help support the Law Enforcement Museum Restoration Project.
