Show-Me Sheep and Goat Project

HARRISONVILLE, MO - University of Missouri – Extension and Lincoln University Cooperative Extension Farm Outreach Program are working together to put on the Show-Me Sheep and Goat Project.

“With the ability to have more profit potential than most other enterprises, sheep and goat producers sometimes have problems marketing their animals or products,” says Susan Jaster of the Lincoln University Innovative Small Farms Outreach Program. If you want to raise sheep or goats for meat or milk, you can learn how to raise and market them successfully from this series of classes. This four week program will allow participants the ability to learn how to run their sheep and goat operation as a business. It will also allow participants to learn how to manage their sheep and goats to enhance productivity.

This series of classes is for beginners or experienced producers as well as those looking to enter into another farming enterpise to increase revenues. When more than one kind of livestock graze a pasture, there can be several advantages gained. Grazing more than one species on a unit of land can more fully utilize the plants available and produce more meat (and profit) from that unit. This type of multi-species grazing behavior is also healthier for the land and forage, keeping the various types of plants in better ecological balance.

The Show-Me Sheep and Goat Project course includes 4 evening classes on: May 21, May 28, June 4, and June 9. The classes will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Cass County Extension Center in Harrisonville, MO (201 West Wall St., Harrisonville, MO 64701).

The program includes a wide variety of educational topics for both beginning and experienced producers. Topics to be covered will include: the sheep and goat industry, selection of breeding stock, pasture management, marketing, diseases in sheep and goats, and business relationships.

Class size is not limited but registration is required by May 20th. The cost of the classes is $30 per person or $50 per couple/entity with refreshments and materials provided. If participants need special accommodations because of a disability, or if you need materials in an alternative format, please inform at time of registration.

Congratulation Teachers!!!!

Congratulations to Heather Goldammer and Kristen Diehl of the Butler R-V School District.

They were awarded the Butler Chamber of Commerce Outstanding High School Teacher of the Year award. Both teachers were presented with plaques to commemorate the event.

Vernon County Drug Arrest

The Nevada Police Department says their investigation of suspected illegal drug activities including the execution of a search warrant at a home in the 300 block of N. Elm Street Wednesday May 14th . Detective Josh Westerhold says three suspects were arrested on charges stemming from the investigation and he identified the suspects as 55-year-old Cheryl Groves, 38-year-old Lori Finney and 23-year-old Kevin Feitz, all of Nevada.

All three face class C felony counts alleging the maintenance of a public nuisance or a home where illegal drugs were used. Bonds for all three were set at $10,000.00 cash-only. Detective Westerhold encourages residents of the community to contact the Police Department if they have any information that could be helpful in combating crime either by calling the police station, 417-448-5100, or through Western Missouri Dispatch either by calling 911 or 417-448-2710.

JUNE 7TH RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT

Relay for Life in Butler is scheduled Saturday June 7th. It will take place around the uptown historical Bates County Square. The all day event will feature activities, entertainment, the Silent Auction and reading of the Luminaries at dusk.

This year’s theme is,“ Color a Cure”. With the 2014 Goal set at $48,500.00. Teams have been having different fundraisers to raise money to meet this goal. Traditional Sand Bag Luminaries are for sale and the Floating Lantern’s.

This year marks the 127^th year for the Butler High School Alumni Association. 2014’s theme is “Forever Young” and the celebration will be held on Saturday, May 24^th. Our Old High denotes Butler’s old high school building on Pine Street.

Here is itinerary for the day:

7:30am – 3^rd Annual BHS Alumni 5k run/walk – check-in at BHS track on Nursery Street

8:00am – 5k run/walk – BHS track on Nursery Street

9:00am – Coffee/Donuts – visiting at Our Old High gym

10:30am – Parade lineup in the east parking lot at BHS on South Fulton Street

11:00am – Parade proceeds to the Butler Square

11:30am – Registration/sign-in for luncheon in BHS cafeteria

2:30pm – Concert/business meeting – BHS Auditorium (concert will feature alumni band and choir)

Construction/Remodeling on the Butler Square

Have you noticed the construction on the South Side of the Butler Square? The new location of the Butler Annex is now being remodeled.

At the present time the Annex is working from the former “ Fredrick’s Law Office” which is being leased to accommodate the offices.

The Butler Annex will be moving to its new home, soon to be located in the former, Townsquare Hardware Building.

Butler Relay for Life, Floating Luminaries for sale until May 30th deadline

The Annual Butler Relay for Life is just a few weeks away. The date is set for June 7th on the Butler Square. If you are interested in purchasing a Floating Luminary you have until May 30th. The Lanterns are ordered so you must purchase them in advance. The traditional sand bag luminaries will be for sale up to and including the evening of the event, June 7th . Veteran’s Tribute Stone Monument Unveiled June 14th

The Veteran’s Tribute Stone Monument will be set on the Butler Courthouse Lawn by the 1st week of June. This project began in August of 2013 and is now in its final stages with the unveiling and dedication scheduled for June 14th at 10 am.
The 4000 pound Veteran’s Tribute Stone Monument includes an engraved base, engraved bench and 2 tablets. Ryan Agnew, Elks member, designed the art work you will see on this magnificent monument. The complete project cost approximately $10,000.00. This beautiful stone monument was the spearhead of the Bates County Elks and will stand as a tribute to those that have and are serving our Country, from World War I to the present.
It took all of us as a community to make this happen. Bates County Elks thanks each and every one of you for your generous donations.
The monument will be installed in two parts prior to the dedication. The Bates County Elks invite you to attend the dedication, to be held at 10 am June 14th on the Bates County courthouse Lawn.

9-1-1 Rural Address Changes deadline September 30th 2014

With the new Enhanced Wireless 9-1-1- Emergency Service installed in Bates County, all residential and commercial structures now have property addresses assigned to them.

This new address could make the difference between the minutes it takes to find your home or business and these few minutes could make the difference between a life and death situation.

To clarify some confusion, those living in rural areas need to change your mailing address.

If you have your mail is delivered to the Post Office and use a Post Office box number and your daily mail is delivered to a Post Office.. you do not have to change your address to those that mail you letters. Everyone in the Rural Community must have a,“ locator address” at the road or on your structure.

If you have a post office box you will still use that as your address for mailing purposes, the country road identification is for emergency use, to find you when you need emergency assistance.

Your County Road Address must be posted on your structure in 3 to 4 inch high reflective numbers. If your structure is more than 100 feet from the main road or not visible from the main road, post the address at the entrance of the driveway. The deadline to make this change will be September 3oth 2014.

Official Custom Created Address Signs are available from Bates County Industries in Butler. They are taking orders if you do not want to make your own, that number is 660-679-3667.

Each address sign will cost $25.00.Each sign is weather resistant, reflective, 3 inch lettering and available in blue or green.

Your cooperation in using the physical address assigned to you when calling 9-1-1 will ensure efficient emergency service. This will avoid delays in emergency vehicle response time. Your 9-1-1 physical or rural residences will also assist in deliver by UPS or FED-EX.

Bottom line.. If you have a Rural Route address you need to make changes . Rural Route addresses will be obsolete after September of 2014.

If your mail is delivered to a Post Office Address , you do not need to change your mailing address but you do need to install a 9-1-1 locator sign on your home or in your yard to assist 9-1-1 emergency vehicles.

Benefit Hog Roast for Strickler Family a Success

Lee Strickler of Taberville lost his entire home due to a fire in late April. The amazing part of the story is he literally lost everything he owned to the fire and/or smoke damage.

The flames from the fire were so hot that a vaccuum cleaner on the porch melted.

The ONLY items he owned that were not damaged from the fire were two Bibles he owned. One was completely untouched and the other had slight smoke damage around the edges.

A benefit hog roast dinner and live auction was held on Saturday, May 10th at the Taberville City Park. Over 100 were in attendance for the free will donation meal and live auction that followed.

The auction brought in over $1700 for the Strickler family, and the free will donation meal netted close to that amount as well. Strickler has also received help from the Red Cross, the Appleton City Ministerial Alliance, River of Life Fellowship in Rockville, and other area ministries and individuals.

Strickler and his family are living in Rockville now, and having lost everything, the needs are substantial.

Frost Advisory Expired Warmer Temps Headed Our Way

The National Weather Service issued a frost advisory for Bates County and some surrounding areas in the early morning hours and has since been allowed to expire.

The advisory went into effect at 3 a.m. this morning and lasted until 8 a.m.

Temperatures to dipped into the low 30s last night prompting a frost advisory, according to NWS.

lows are expected to be below normal over the weekend and you are advised to take precaution in protecting any vegetation.

Today's high will be around 60 and over the weekend temperatures are expected to be in the 70's.

Frost Advisory in Effect

Revision: Butler Parks and Recreation Softball League Information

We have a revision to a previous press release from the Butler Parks and Recreation. They will be hosting a non-competitive, Co-Ed Softball League for Local Civic Groups. The entry deadline is Monday May 19th, with a $150.00 fee per team. Sign up at the Butler City Hall .

Cass County Sheriff's Office

The Cass County Sheriff's Office is investigating a string of vandalism that occurred this weekend in rural Cass County.

Around 3:00 am Saturday morning deputies were sent to the area of E. 327th and Lone Tree Rd. to investigate a report of property damage.

Deputies took information from 23 separate victims regarding damage to mailboxes, vehicle windows, and house windows. In total the suspect(s) damaged 20 mailboxes, 5 vehicles, an RV and smashed windows on one house.

The general area affected was southwest of Harrisonville near Lone Tree, Horn Rd, and Belle Plain Road from E. 299 to E. 327th.

In addition to the reported vandalism deputies were also assisting the Missouri State Highway Patrol after it was reported someone was throwing items from the E. 327th St. overpass onto I-49.

Cass County Investigators estimate the total damage done by the suspect(s) at over $12,000.00.

Anyone with information regarding the vandalism can call the Cass County Sheriff's Office at (816) 380-5200.

Butler Library Annual l Book Sale

The Butler Public Library will host their Annual Book Sale June 5th 6th and 7th at 100 West Atkinson Street in Butler. The sneak Preview will be held Wednesday June 4th from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Admission to the opening will be $5.00 per person.
The Annual Book Sale will begin on June 5th and continue through June 7th

Postal Carriers collect 680 pound of donations

Every second Saturday in May, letter carries in more than ten thousand cities and towns across America collect the goodness and compassion of their postal customers who participate in the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp out Hunger National Food Drive- the largest one-day food drive in the nation.
The May, local area letter Carriers Food Drive was a huge success in this community. Local Citizen’s donated over 680 pounds of non-perishable food during the May, “Stamp Out Hunger Drive”.
The food donated will be forwarded to the Harvester’s National Organization and then distributed to various Food Pantries to replenish their shelves.
Each donation will put nutritious food on the plates of adults and children. Your Postal Carrier thanks you for your generous donations to their food drive.

Street Rods Headed to Springfield

Springfield, MO – More than 2,200 pre-1985 specialty cars will be in Springfield for the Mid-America Street Rod Nationals Plus May 23-25.

The 31st Annual National Street Rod Association car show will feature street rods, cool customs, pick-ups, restored muscle cars and just about any kind of car you can imagine at Ozark Empire Fairgrounds.

Along with hundreds of unique cars, a variety of activities will be available including games, an arts and crafts show, entertainment, a swap meet, a model car display, a quilt show and more.

The NSRA Super Prize Program will give away more than $72,000 worth of merchandise and there will be three drawings for $3,000 each.

On May 25, the award-winning vehicles from the show will be on display at the Circle of Winners awards area and the awards ceremony will take place at 2 p.m.

Spectator tickets are $15 for adults, $6 for ages 6 to 12 and free for children younger than 6 with an adult. Active military, people older than 60 and NSRA members with appropriate identification will receive a $2 discount.

Spectator hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. May 23-24 and 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. May 25. Registration is 2-6 p.m. May 22, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. May 23 and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. May 24 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 2431 N. Glenstone Ave.
