Butler Chamber to Host BBQ Championship & Festival

BUTLER, MO - According to the Butler Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lee Anna Schowengerdt, very exciting plans are being made for the Bates Counties’ 7th annual Barbecue Championship and Festival. The event will be held October 25th and 26th and is sponsored by Country Mart and other area businesses.

This event is on the roster for the Kansas City Barbecue Society and will draw local teams as well as the KC metro area and surrounding counties.
Back by popular demand is the People’s Choice Event. Teams are given 2 pork butts to smoke. Attendees pay $8.00 to taste and vote for their favorite BBQ.

Bates County 4-H Scores Big at Ozark Empire Fair

Springfield, MO - According to Alan J. Mundey, 4-H Youth Specialist, Bates County 4-H’ers once again displayed first-rate exhibits at the Ozark Empire Fair, held July 25 through August 3, in Springfield.

A total of 90 exhibits were taken to the fair. The local 4-H’ers brought home 6 Grand Champion ribbons and 12 Reserve Champion ribbons. In addition, Bates County 4-H’ers were awarded 72 blue ribbons and 17 red ribbons.

The Grand Champion recipients are as follows: Erin Armentrout for zucchinis, Bethanie Cole for a cathedral window quilt, Alex Jenkins for a boot planter and a deer antler knife, Alexis O’Farrell for a sundress and purse, and Triston Trumbore for a shooting sports bag.

Reserve Champions include Shelby Bartz for a roadtrip gift basket and for a pig board, Haley Bolling for her Haley and Rusty Shadow Box, Morgan Bradley for a matching game, Gabrielle Cole for a scarf, Luke Crawford for corn, Allison Jenkins for her owl cake, Isaac Kagarice for his rabbit nesting box, Emma McIntire for a vest, Jack Rotert for a bee house, McKenzie Self for tile stone, and Dakota Steinhoff for a rabbit cage.

Linn County Fair Demolition Derby

The Linn County Fair will kick off on Saturday August 3rd at 7:30AM. Throughout the day there will be different activities including the

Demolition Derby at 8PM in the Arena.

There will be three classes to compete in: 80’s and Newer Stock, Compacts, and Mini Vans. For each class the top three winners will be awarded prize money.

For the 80s and Newer Stock class first place will receive $1000, second place $500, and third place $300. For the Compacts and Mini Vans classes first place will receive $600, second place $300, and third place $100.

Tickets for the event will be available at the gate. Adults are $12. Kids ages 6-12 years are $4 and Kids 5 and under are free.

Advance Tickets Now on Sale for the MO State Fair Jumbo Pass

SEDALIA, Mo - Families can save money by purchasing tickets in advance for Missouri State Fair gate admission and carnival rides.

A new $45 jumbo pass is being offered for the first time, which is a $132 value. This new ticket provides an individual with a wristband that is valid for four consecutive days of gate admission and unlimited carnival rides, August 12 through August 15th.

Both the new jumbo pass and a single day carnival ride ticket, for $18.95, are available exclusively at any Walgreens, now through August 7th.

Walgreens and Missouri Break Time convenience stores are the outlets for the $27 Unlimited Daily Deal ticket, which is a $38 value. It's valid for one day gate admission and one day unlimited carnival rides, sold now through August 17th.

The advance adult gate admission ticket, which saves $2, can be purchased at Missouri Break Time convenience stores and Orscheln Farm and Home stores, now through August 7th.

Additional savings opportunities that will be offered during the Missouri State
Fair include:

•August 8th, $2 gate admission all day for ages 6 and older.

71st Annual Hume Fair & Rodeo

“Hume Fair or Bust! Digging for the Good Times!” The 71st Annual Hume Fair and Rodeo will be July 30th through August 3rd.

Some important events to remember are the Talent Show on August 2 at 6PM on the Band Stand and following the Talent Show will be the first night of the Hume Rodeo at 8PM.

The Hume Fair and Rodeo Parade will be at 11AM on August 3. The theme for the parade, this year, is “Hume Fair or Bust! Digging for the Good Times!”. The Hume Fair and Rodeo will come to a close with the last night of the Hume Rodeo at 8PM and the Street Dance following the rodeo.

MO State Horse Show Starts Thursday

The Missouri State Fair competition schedule officially gets underway this Thursday, July 25th, with the 4-H and FFA Horse Show, followed by the prestigious Society Horse Show beginning July 30th.

Both events are open to the public at no charge.

The 4-H and FFA Horse Show will start at 2PM July 25th at the Coliseum, with an 8AM start time July 26th in the Mathewson Exhibition Center. Saturday and Sunday shows will begin at 7AM and 8AM at the Coliseum and Mathewson Exhibition Center, respectively.

All show classes will be under the direction of the Fair’s equine superintendent Jamie Daniel.
Orscheln Farm and Home is the sponsor for the t-shirts worn by the youth during these shows and during the Fair.

Their Missouri stores, as well as Missouri Breaktime Convenience Stores, serve as retail outlets for advance adult gate admission tickets, which are on sale now for $6 through August 7th.

The Society Horse Show will begin with Walking Horse and Fox Trot competitions at 6PM July 30th. Competitions will continue with start times at 10AM and 6PM daily July 31st through August 3rd.

All events will be held in the Mathewson Exhibition Center and managed by the Fair’s superintendent Lenard Davenport.

The Society Horse Show will also host two annual ceremonies on the fairgrounds. The first ceremony will be held at 6PM on August 2nd, recognizing Floyd and Lynn Posenke, of Springfield, for their years of participation in the Show.

The second ceremony will recognize grand and stake championships the evening of August 3rd.

Start times are tentative for both the 4-H and FFA Horse Show and the Society Horse Show, due to variances with competitions.

Free Entertainment at the Missouri State Fair

SEDALIA - Families attending this year’s Missouri State Fair can enjoy hours of free exciting professional entertainment. The schedule will include everything from new features like the Welde’s Big Bear Expedition and Knights of Valour, a full metal jousting troupe, to returning crowd favorites, such as the Amazing Anastasini Circus, sponsored by U.S. Cellular, racing pigs, sponsored by Bluegreen Corporation and petting zoo, sponsored by Sam’s Club.

The new Welde’s Big Bear Expedition features a family of bears, which serves as wildlife ambassadors, located west of the Agriculture Building August 8th through the 18th. The bears have notable lineage, with their bear relatives performing with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in the 1940s.

Knights of Valour, as seen on the History Channel, are North America’s premier full-contact joust troupe. The troupe will alternate between performing weapons demonstrations and jousting in shows at the State Fair Arena. This one-day-only experience will include exciting horsemanship, bravery, and chivalry from noon to 5:15PM on August 11th.

The State Fair will also provide four stages packed with 11 days of free, professional entertainment. Acts on the Kids Stage, sponsored by Subway, will include the Thank a Farmer Magic Show August 8th through the 18th, Babaloo Music and Fun August 8th through the 12th, and Spoon Man August 13th through the 18th.

Music, comedy and variety acts are scheduled on three other free entertainment venues, which include Touchstone Energy Stage, Budweiser Stage and Ditzfeld Transfer Stage. Strolling entertainers, acts that meander the fairgrounds entertaining fairgoers, will include The Sweeney Family Band Country Comedy Review, sponsored by McDonalds, and Those Funny Little People, sponsored by Sonic.

Paola Fireworks Spectacular!

PAOLA KS - Paola’s Fireworks Spectacular will be July 3rd at the Miola Lake in Paola. The Gates will be open at 4:30 and Fireworks will be at dusk.

This event relies on donations from individuals and businesses from the community. Donations will be taken at the gate.

Missouri State Fair Began Accepting Essays in New Contest

Written essays from youth, on the topic of alleviating hunger, are being accepted as of June 27, as part of a new 2-part contest, which culminates at the Missouri State Fair. The contest is being offered to help raise awareness of the hunger concern in Missouri and to perpetuate the Fair’s food drive promotion taking place August 13th, Missouri Farmers Care Food Drive Tuesday.

There will be two divisions in the contest, 8-12 years of age and 13-17 years of age. Essays from up to three entrants in each age division will be selected to advance to the speech portion of the competition. These finalists will be asked to read their essays in front of a panel of judges at 2PM on August 13th, on the Kid’s Stage. A first place winner from each age division will receive two gate admission tickets and two carnival ride wristbands, good for the 2013 Missouri State Fair.

Those wanting to participate are asked to submit an essay, 500 words or less, describing how they think Missouri farmers can help alleviate hunger in Missouri. The essays should be typed in a 12-point font, and double spaced. A cover page written by the parent or guardian must accompany the essay, and must list the entrant’s name, age, mailing address, phone number, and email address, if available. These contest rules are also available at the state fair’s website under special contests.

Essays are due by Friday, July 26, and can be mailed to the Missouri State Fair, 2503 W. 16th Street, Sedalia, Mo. 65301, or emailed to mostatefair@mda.mo.gov. The Fair will notify those participants selected to advance to the speech portion of the contest.

There is no entry fee for the contest; however finalists in the speech portion of the contest, and those accompanying them Tuesday August 13th, will be required to pay gate admission into the Fair.

Country Mart Block Party & Ice Cream Social

BUTLER - Country Mart in Butler will be having a Block Party and Ice Cream Social on July 6th from 11AM to 3PM. On location, at Country Mart, will be FM92 along with the Life Flight Helicopter and the Butler Fire Department. KMAM-KMOE will be there from 11a to 1p.

The whole family is invited to Country Mart’s Block Party and Ice Cream Social. For children there will be games, face painting, clowns, a bounce house, and a cake walk. Hot dogs, chips, and drinks will available with donations to benefit the Butler Bear Cheerleaders.

Country Mart will also be having samples throughout the entire store, a 40 foot peach shortcake, and ice cream sundaes. Country Mart is located on Fort Scott Street in Butler. Bring your family and friends to the Country Mart Block Party and Ice Cream Social on July 6th from 11a to 3p.

2nd Annual South Grand River Watershed Alliance 'know Your Watershed Festival'

HARRISONVILLE, Mo - The 2nd Annual South Grand River Watershed Alliance “Know Your Watershed” Festival will be Saturday June 29th. The festival will begin at 9AM and continue until Noon on the Harrisonville Square in Harrisonville. The festival is free to the public.

During the festival those attending will learn about impacts of storm-water runoff and nonpoint source pollution to our streams and lakes and actions to take to minimize these effects. There will be a Drug Take-Back to explain how to safely dispose your unwanted prescriptions and/or over the counter medications, and a stream table that will demonstrate stream dynamics.

More informative stations during the festival will be Wetlands, NRCS, Invasive Exotic Plants and Animals, Stream Team, Native Plants, and more.

MO State Fair Dreams Big With This Years Food Drive Industry Challenge

SEDALIA, Mo - The Missouri State Fair will be increasing its efforts to collect canned food this year as it joins in a challenge presented by its industry trade association. Fair Director Mark Wolfe said that members of the International Association of Fairs and Festivals have been invited to participate in its campaign, Dream Big, which has set an industry-wide goal of collecting 20 million pounds of food at fairs and festivals held in 2013.

“During the past two fairs, our food drive has brought in 20,000 pounds of food,” Wolfe said.

The special gate promotion will be offered again August 13, “Missouri Farmers Care Food Drive Tuesday, in cooperation with Ford and Missouri Farmers Care.” Adults and children bringing cans to the Missouri State Fair on August 13 will receive $1 off gate admission for every can donated, for up to half-off gate admission. Regular adult gate admission is $8, regular child admission is $2 for ages 6-13, and child admission is free every day for ages 5 and younger.

To help facilitate an upswing in the quantity of food collected this year, Missouri FFA and Missouri Ford dealerships will be involved, and collection days during the State Fair will be extended to include all 11 days.

Midwest Ford Dealers and St. Louis Ford Dealers will be collecting food at their locations now through August 12. Dealers will be giving a $1 off discount coupon for each can brought into their facility. The coupons can be redeemed at the Fair’s admission gates Tuesday, August 13.

A Canstruction® project will support the food drive again this year, serving as a visual reminder of food products that farmers bring to tables every day. A massive mural of the FFA emblem will be painted with nearly 6,000 yellow and blue cans of food and on display in the Agriculture Building August 8 through 18. Fairgoers will have an opportunity to purchase a can of food at the exhibit during the Fair and place the can in an unfinished element of the emblem; these monetary donations will go to the MFBA.

The 21st Annual Coal Centre Days July 12th & 13th

PRESCOTT, Ks - Friday July 12th will kick off the event with the Smokin’ Competition. The Smokin’ Competition will be held all day.

On July 12th there will also be a Pulled Pork Dinner starting at 5PM and continuing to 7PM, Ol’ Fashion Singing with the Charlie Horse Band, and an Ice Cream Social at 7:30PM. All events on July 12th will be held at the Prescott County View Home.

The 21st Annual Coal Centre Days will continue through Saturday July 12th. The day will begin with the Parade at 10AM on Main Street. Line-up for the parade will be at 9AM at 3rd and Main Street. The theme for the Parade will be “Got Milk?”.

Following the Parade will be many events at Faber Park. These events include the Rust and Chrome Show at 11AM. There will be a $15 entry fee for the Rust and Chrome Show. Following the Rust and Chrome show will a Baby Contest and Horseshoe Pitch.

The Baby Contest will be diapers only.
At Faber Park there will also be a Cake Walk at Noon and a Garden Tractor Pull at 1PM. Bourbon County Garden Tractor Pulling Association rules will apply to the Garden Tractor Pull. At 1:30PM there will be a Turtle Race and Kids Games.

The Automobile Trivia Contest will take place at 2PM and the Top 20 of the Rust and Chrome Show will be awarded at 2:30PM. The Pit Crew Challenge will be at 3PM. Following the Pit Crew Challenge will be the Burn-Out Contest at 3:30PM. There will be a $10 entry fee and a $200 payout.

To wrap up the evening and the 21st Annual Coal Centre Days will be the Dinner from 5 to 7PM and the Draft Horse Pull at 7PM. Both events will take place at their new location, Faber Park.
