Missouri is the 2nd largest producer of beef cattle in the United States. The majority of these cattle are produced on the more than 17 million acres of Kentucky 31 tall fescue grown in the state. Kentucky 31 tall fescue is well adapted to the soil and weather conditions of Missouri. It is also insect and nematode resistant and has a long growing season. Unfortunately, Kentucky 31 tall fescue has a downside. Most fescue in the state is infected with a fungal endophyte that is toxic to grazing animals. This toxicity can be dealt with through various management strategies or by completely replacing endophyte-infected fescue with a novel-endophyte fescue or a different species of grass. The following topics will be discussed at the conference:
1. The negative effects of tall fescue toxicosis on animal performance and health
2. Managing Kentucky 31 tall fescue to reduce toxicosis effects
3. Converting infected pastures to novel endophyte varieties of tall fescue
4. The economics of converting to novel endophyte fescue versus managing existing stands of Kentucky 31
The conference will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, March 10th at the regional extension office located at 908 N. 2nd Street in Clinton. For more information or to register for this conference, contact the Henry County Extension Center at (660)885-5556.

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
The internet is torn on what color a particular dress is that was posted online.
The post, found on BuzzFeed Life, shows a photo of a dress that appears to be blue and black, however others may speculate that the dress is white and gold.
The image was posted by Tumblr user “swiked,” who said she sees blue and black while her friend sees white and gold.
The Eyewitness News newsroom can’t agree on two colors.
The dress can be found on Amazon and is listed as “royal blue,” which likely proves the over exposure of the viral image is what’s causing the disagreement.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri State Auditor Tom Schweich has died after being hospitalized on Thursday, according to a statement from the auditor’s office.
He was taken to a hospital Thursday after experiencing what his staff described as a “medical situation.”
His spokesman, Spence Jackson, said the auditor “experienced a medical situation at his home” in Clayton on Thursday morning and was being treated at a St. Louis area hospital. Jackson declined to release more details.
“We ask for respect and privacy for him and his family during this time,” Jackson said.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that a source said Schweich had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Schweich, 54, has served as auditor since January 2011 and won re-election in November to a second, four-year term. He announced a month ago that he is seeking the Republican nomination for governor in 2016, and was gearing up for an expected primary fight against former U.S. attorney and House Speaker Catherine Hanaway.

One of the Museum’s most anticipated programs each year is the “Show ‘n Tell Gathering.” There have been many items shared over the years and the stories
about these objects are always fun and fascinating. Some are sentimental, while others are practical. It’s always a surprise to see what folks choose to bring to share with others.
As in year’s past, there will be a short Society membership meeting at the beginning of the program and the election of directors for the board will be held. Following this short meeting, the sharing will begin. After everyone is done telling about their special object, a freewill donation luncheon will be served. The morning will be both entertaining and educational! Together, we will be Preserving Our History & Sustaining Our Heritage.

On February 24th, late last night Bates County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a shots fired call that had happened earlier in Rockville. Sheriff Chad Anderson was notified of the nature of the call and then called out extra units and the Detective Division to meet him in Rockville to begin an investigation. Once Bates County Deputies arrived at the reporting party’s residence they received the following information from the victim.
The victim stated he was traveling South on B highway in front of Seiders One Stop. The victim stated he saw a white in color SUV possibly a Jeep traveling on B highway behind him. The SUV then attempted to pass him in the area of Seiders One Stop. The victim stated that while the SUV was trying to pass him, one of the occupants fired two gun shots at his truck. The white SUV continued to follow the vehicle onto County Road 15305 where they fired three more shots at the victim. The victim arrived at his residence, exited his vehicle and returned fire at the white SUV. The white SUV then sped off.
During the investigation a search of the area was conducted for the suspect vehicle. The tail gate of the victim’s truck had been shot once. The bullet hole in the tail gate did not penetrate all the way through. The bullet was trapped inside the tailgate. Sheriff Chad Anderson had the Bates County Detective Division remove the bullet from the tail gate. The bullet will be sent to the crime lab for analysis to determine the caliber and to see if the bullet is a match to a specific weapon that may have been used in other crimes.

If convicted, both men would face life sentences, with 30 years of parole ineligibility. Three additional men were arrested in 2010 and extradited to New Jersey in connection to the case, charged with first degree kidnapping.
26 year old Andrew Wadel, of Rich Hill, received sentences from both New Jersey and Vernon County in June of 2012, where he was sentenced to 18 years in prison. 60 year old Roy Slates and 53 year old William Barger, both of Nevada, have sentences that are currently pending.
Slates was given a 5 year suspended sentence in November 2011, having pled guilty in New Jersey to conspiracy to commit theft by extortion. In Vernon County, he pled guilty to felonies of concealing a felony and hindering prosecution.

BUTLER, Mo – On Thursday through Saturday, February 19-21, the Butler Bears varsity wrestling team traveled to the 2015 MSHSAA State Wrestling Tournament at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia, MO. The Bears took one wrestler to the state tournament, Freshman Jacob Shipley (106).
Butler Wrestlers’ Individual Match Results At State Tournament
106 Jacob Shipley (FR) 1 win, 2 losses
Shipley drew a tough wrestler from Principia on Thursday morning, Caleb Kelly. Shipley lost by fall in the second period. Kelly went on to advance to the semifinal. Shipley had to wrestle back on the consolation side immediately after, winning a decision over Clayton Haslag of Fatima 9-2. Friday morning, Shipley landed in the second round wrestleback with another strong opponent, Konner Shewmaker (SO) of Versailles. Although he secured the first takedown, Shipley found himself in trouble in the second period, losing by fall. Shipley finished his season at 33-14.
Coach’s Comments
“This post-season was a tough one for the Bears. Our new district, district 3, had 6 of the top 12 teams at state from last season in it. The district also has depth in the particular weight classes where we have wrestlers trying to take that next step- qualifying for state. Only one of our 8 varsity wrestlers wrestling at this district tournament had even attended last season’s district tournament. The wrestlers who return next season should be better prepared to have a chance to get out of this district and get to Columbia. We’re proud that Jacob Shipley got a chance to represent us at state. Winning a match at state also validates that you didn’t sneak out of your district or get lucky. Not every draw at state is equal, and I do think there were a few other 106 lb wrestlers that he would have matched up better against on the consolation side. Regardless, he takes back state-level experience to his teammates and to the practice room for this off-season. In the future, his next goal will be to keep standing through Saturday- when they pass out the medals. I would like to say thank you once again to our wrestling families, our media, and all of our fans through this season. We appreciate your support.”

HENRY COUNTY, Mo – According to Henry County Sheriff J. Kent Oberkrom, a search warrant was served on Monday, February 23, 2015 at 414 North Maple Street, Calhoun, Missouri. The search warrant was applied for and subsequently issued by the court, after review by the prosecuting attorney that allowed law enforcement to search for the person of Vincent Paul Abell, II and a minor child at that residence.
Earlier, Vincent Paul Abell, II was served an ex-parte order of protection at his residence. The order gave custody of a one year old minor child to the mother, who was the petitioner on the order of protection. Mr. Abell, after being served the order of protection, refused to comply with the custody order and subsequently went into his residence, locking the door and failing to respond to several attempts by Henry County Deputies to open the door and comply with the order.
Subsequently, a search warrant was applied for and issued by the court granting law enforcement to enter the residence and search for the person of Vincent Paul Abell, II and the minor child. While law enforcement officers were preparing to enter the residence, Mr. Abell bolted from a garage and entered the home on the back porch. Major Robert Hills, Cpl. Aaron Brown and Deputy Leonard Kubilus pursued Abell into the residence where he was taken into custody. Another adult in the home was cooperative with law enforcement and surrendered the minor child in accordance with the order of the court.
Mr. Abell was charged with violation of an order of protection and failing to obey the lawful order of a law enforcement officer. Abell was transported to the Henry County Detention Center where he was later released after posting a $2,500.00 bond.

The BBB has been made aware of a business with a local PO Box that has been threatening consumers with jail time if they don’t fork over money.
Century Processing has been calling consumers across the country about debts that had been paid off years ago. They call from 816-812-0142 and claim to operate from PO Box 4201, Kansas City, MO. They claim that these debts are still outstanding and demand payment. The company then makes various threats about charges being brought against consumers, FBI involement, and placing warrants for their arrests. This type of threat violates the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. The business hopes to bully and scare the consumer into making payments.
Consumers should be aware of their rights concerning debt collection practices.
-A consumer cannot be arrested for owing a debt.
-A debt collector cannot lie to the debtor for any reason. If they tell a consumer that he or she will be arrested, they are lying.
-A debt collector must validate the debt, in writing, if requested to do so.
If a business is unwilling follow these rules, they are in violation of federal law and the consumer should hang up the phone. If the consumer is still worried about owing a legitimate debt, he or she should contact the original creditor for more information.
BUTLER, Mo – Rodger Cecil, Butler’s Animal Control Officer, met with Bert Brooks with House of Hound in Grandview, Mo last week in regard to using his services to decrease the number of dogs that are euthanized in Butler due to low adoption rates and neglectful owners who choose not to pick up their dogs.
Brooks is working with the city to help save the lives of some of these dogs. Unfortunately, they will not be able to save the life of every dog that comes their way, but this is a start to decrease the number of dogs that will have to be put down.
Cecil has verified that House of Hound is a legitimate dog rescue organization and has reviewed Mr. Brooks’ state and local documentation which is available for public viewing on his website www.houseofhound.org. In the past, opportunities to work with rescue organizations have failed due to those organizations not being legitimate licensed rescues. By law Butler is required to work only with those rescues which are legitimate and licensed.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning ( 2/22/15) Belton Police received a report of an individual brandishing a weapon outside of a vehicle.
Shortly after, Raymore Police received a call that an individual exited a car matching the same description and ran into the Raymore Walmart.
Raymore Walmart was evacuated and police responded to the scene. The Cass County Tactical Response Unit and K-9 Unit were activated to do an in-depth search of the store. The individual was not located within the store and police believe he may have evacuated with the rest of the patrons. No one was injured. Detectives have been working this case since the initial calls came in this morning. It remains an active investigation.
“We are very fortunate this ended the way it did,” Raymore Police Chief Jan Zimmerman said. “The safety of our residents and visitors to our community is our top priority and we appreciate the public’s patience as we conducted our investigation today.”
Officers from the Raymore and Belton Police Departments, along with the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Lee’s Summit Police Department, and Missouri Highway Patrol assisted with the response effort. Walmart reopened for business shortly after 3 p.m.

(CNN) – The CDC has discovered a new virus that may have contributed to a Kansas man’s death, the agency announced Friday.
Named the Bourbon virus after the county where the patient lived, the virus is likely spread by tick or insect bites, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.
A 50-year-old man suffered multiple tick bites in the spring of 2014 while working outside on his property, the CDC said in an article published in the agency’s “Infectious Diseases” journal.
The man fell ill over the next two days, went to a doctor on the third day, was hospitalized and died of a heart attack 11 days after becoming sick, the CDC said.
While the man was hospitalized, test results for many infectious diseases came back negative, the press release said. A blood sample was sent to the CDC, which determined a new virus had been discovered, the press release said.
The man’s symptoms included fever, tiredness, rash, headache, other body aches, nausea and vomiting, the website said. The man had low blood counts for cells that fight infection and help prevent bleeding, the website said.
Though the CDC only has one case to work with, the agency said “it is likely that Bourbon virus is spread through tick or other insect bites.”
The CDC recommends people protect themselves by tick bites by using insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, avoiding bushy and wooded areas and checking for ticks after spending time outdoors.
The Bourbon virus is part of a group of viruses linked to tick or insect bites in Europe, Asia and Africa, the CDC said.
This is the first time a virus in this group, known as thogotoviruses, has been known to cause illness in the United States, the CDC said.

Staff exodus makes a tough business tougher in Butler, Mo.
By ERIC ADLER –
The Kansas City Star
Running a newspaper can be a rough business. In tiny Butler, Mo., it just got rougher.
So it happens when all five members of the editorial staff of the town’s weekly paper — The News Xpress — work to put a paper to bed and then, on that same night, collectively hand in their resignations. Then, just days later, they publish a brand new, competitive 16-page newspaper of their own, while opening an office only a few doors down from their former employer.
“All of our women up front, they bought a new paper and they opened one next door and they’re trying to run us out of town,” Chase Peters, the son of News Xpress owner Jon Peters, lamented this week as he and family scrambled to put out a paper with no staff.
Said Jon Peters: “I don’t need sympathy … I need labor. I need layout. I need workers.”
The walkout in Bates County happened Feb. 9.
When the staff of the The News Xpress departed, they also left no one to put out the company’s two other publications, the weekly shoppers Xchanger and Xchanger2, because the same staff produced all three publications.
Of course, every story has at least two sides. Lee Anna Schowengerdt, the 40-year-old owner and publisher of two new competing weeklies — The Messenger newspaper and The Hub, a shopper — doesn’t think Peters should have been taken by complete surprise.
“I think in his heart he probably knew it was coming,” she said.
Schowengerdt had worked as The News Xpress company’s graphic designer for 20 years and, before that, had worked there on and off since age 13. Her mother, Paula Schowengerdt, 66, was the company’s office manager and worked there for 33 years.
Both originally had worked for Jim and Carol Peters who, as husband and wife, published the first issue of the Xchanger in 1978. Then, in 1984, they expanded, launching the News Xpress.
When Jim Peters died in October 2012 at age 79, the paper was left in the hands of son Jon. Both Schowengerdts said they thought the working relationship suffered.
“I loved his mother and dad. I learned a lot of from them. They did everything for me,” Lee Anna Schowengerdt said. “But … it changed.”
Lee Anna Schowengerdt said that last year she asked Peters whether he might be willing to sell The News Xpress and Xchanger papers. She said that when he quoted a price of $1.8 million, she started looking elsewhere. Nearby, she found Linda Oldfield, who not only was willing to sell her 126-year-old weekly, The Adrian Journal, but also the paper’s building in Adrian, on East Main Street, along with its sister paper, The Drexel Star, as part of the deal.
Price? “You can say less than $250,000,” said Lee Anna Schowengerdt, who put up the money with her business partner and life partner, Tabitha Leister, 32.
The rest of the staff — Andrea Jackson, reporter and photographer; Susan Johnston, business manager; and Annette Forester, accounting manager — joined the exodus. Paula Schowengerdt was named editor. Linda Oldfield also joined the team.
The first edition of The Messenger was mailed to subscribers on Feb. 13, even as a satellite office in Butler near the Xpress is being constructed.
Notably, the first paper included a front-page letter from the wife of the late C.A. Moore, the beloved reporter who had worked and written for various Bates County newspapers for 70 of his 83 years, practically up to the day he died in November. Moore wrote for the News Xpress from the moment it opened just over 30 years ago. To many Bates County residents, the Xpress and C.A. Moore were one and the same.
In her letter, Anna Moore made it clear that before C.A. passed away he had also intended to be part of The Messenger.
“Congratulations on the new newspaper,” Anna Moore wrote. “What an exciting and busy time at the beginning of a new business. C.A. had looked forward to this time and was so pleased to be included on the staff.…”
The second edition is being mailed Friday with stories on snow and a council meeting leading the news.
Jon Peters, meantime, was reluctant to confirm or spend time talking about the details of his staff’s departure.
“I have a deadline,” he said.
The staff of the messenger News Paper would like to reach out to their subscribers who paid for a subscription to the Drexel Star,
now going to print as The Messenger.
The Drexel Star enjoyed a long history, founded in 1892. It was purchased by the Gunn family in 1992 with their daughter and her husband, Steve and Linda Oldfield. The Oldfields took the lead in publishing both the Adrian Journal and the Drexel Start in 1994.
The staff of The Messenger understand the disappointment of losing a newspaper devoted solely to your town. Your news will continue to be covered, as is promised under the banner of The Messenger and will be a continuation of the Drexel Star and The Adrian Journal.
Your subscription to the Drexel Star will continue to receive The Messenger for the full length of the subscription.
If you held a subscription for both the Drexel Star and the Adrian Journal, you will receive the full time, one subscription extended at the end of the first.
The messenger assures all readers that their goal is to produce a quality product.
JEFFERSON CITY – Another round of winter weather is expected to affect driving conditions in Missouri tonight and through Saturday. The mix of precipitation could include ice and snow for much of the state. Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be out in full force to treat roads during and after the storm. Motorists are advised to check road conditions before they travel and avoid travel if it all possible especially with potential icy conditions.
MoDOT adjusts its practices to deal differently with each storm and tries to return major roads to near-normal driving conditions as soon as possible after a storm’s end. Because MoDOT can’t possibly clear all 34,00 miles of state highways immediately after a snowstorm, the department has set priorities for which roads to clear first.
Roads with the highest traffic volumes are plowed or treated first. These roads include interstates and other heavily traveled state routes, which receive ongoing operations in a storm. Lettered and numbered routes with lower traffic volumes are plowed to allow for two-way traffic, with concentration on hills, curves, and intersections. Traffic on these roads may have more snow on them until the higher-volume roads are mostly clear.
As soon as possible after a storm ends, our goal is to return highest traveled routes to mostly clear conditions and to plow and treat the critical areas of hills, curves and intersections on all other routes.
Motorists who need to travel are advised to bring a cell phone and winter survival supplies. Current road conditions are posted on MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map at http://traveler.modot.org/map/. The map is also available as an app on your mobile device.

In recognition of national Scams Month this February, the Missouri Lottery wants to remind players that now, more than ever, they have the resources to self-verify if their ticket has won a Lottery prize.
“We have developed a number of prize verification services for player convenience and safety,” began May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery.
Additionally, Reardon added that all new Scratchers games have specialized FailSafe® barcodes on the ticket’s play area beneath the scratch-off coating. Scratchers tickets with the FailSafe barcode can also be scanned on the CAT machine to verify the ticket’s prize. To combat these types of scams, the Lottery has developed a variety of verification services to make it as easy as possible for players to identify if they have won a Lottery prize.
In addition to the Check-A-Ticket Machines, other self-verification services include:
· Player-requested prize receipts from retail clerks;
· Checking winning Draw Game numbers and remaining Scratchers prize amounts at MOLottery.com;
· Signing up to receive winning Draw Game numbers via email or text message through a My Lottery Players Club account; and
· Calling a regional winning numbers hotline:
Mid-Missouri: (573) 751-1111
Kansas City: (8116) 795-0203
Springfield: (417) 888-4271
St. Louis: (314) 340-5805
Additionally, after purchasing any Lottery ticket, players should sign the back, keep the ticket in a safe place and promptly check to see if they have won a prize.
When in doubt, players should contact the Missouri Lottery at 1-866-MOLOTTERY
(1-866-665-6883) to report suspicious activity.
Unfair or deceptive business practices can also be reported by calling the Missouri Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-392-8222.

Each year, FFA chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week. The week-long tradition began in 1947 when the National FFA Board of Directors designated the week of George Washington’s birthday as National FFA Week in recognition of his legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. The first National FFA Week was held in 1948. Today, FFA Week always runs Saturday to Saturday and encompasses Feb. 22, Washington’s birthday.
National FFA Week did not start out as a week-long event. At first it was National FFA Day. The 1933 National FFA Convention Proceedings records the beginning of FFA Day in this way: “Stewart of Montana requested the floor at this time to present a matter of general interest. He suggested the idea of having a special Future Farmer Day some time during 1934, preferably on one of the regular national FFA broadcasting days. It was pointed out that the various state associations could perhaps plan special state broadcasts also on that day and that chapters might plan their father and son banquets on the date specified. The idea seemed to meet with general delegate approval and after some discussion it was moved by Stewart that the Board of Trustees arrange for such a day; motion passed.”
National FFA Week is an opportunity for FFA members, alumni and sponsors to advocate for agricultural education and FFA. It’s a time to share with local, state and national audiences what FFA is and the impact it has on members every day.
