Missouri State Auditor dead at age 54

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri State Auditor Tom Schweich has died after being hospitalized on Thursday, according to a statement from the auditor’s office.

He was taken to a hospital Thursday after experiencing what his staff described as a “medical situation.”

His spokesman, Spence Jackson, said the auditor “experienced a medical situation at his home” in Clayton on Thursday morning and was being treated at a St. Louis area hospital. Jackson declined to release more details.

“We ask for respect and privacy for him and his family during this time,” Jackson said.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that a source said Schweich had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Schweich, 54, has served as auditor since January 2011 and won re-election in November to a second, four-year term. He announced a month ago that he is seeking the Republican nomination for governor in 2016, and was gearing up for an expected primary fight against former U.S. attorney and House Speaker Catherine Hanaway.
