How to disassemble & store your artificial Christmas tree

Artificial Christmas trees are durable by design. If properly cared for, the tree retain its original shape, style and luster.

Below is a five step process to preserve your investment in a pre lit artificial Christmas tree. Each of these five steps are completed prior to storing the Christmas tree each year. These steps are completed after removing all decorations but prior to unplugging the lights.

Helpers:

You may want to wear a pair of lightweight gloves.

Bright colored tape or bright colored string to help mark non-working lights

Strong twine or cloth covered bungee cords (non rubber bungee cords)

1. Locate and Replace Broken or Burned-out Lights

How long?

About 15-20 minutes for a 7. 5 foot Christmas tree.

What?

The goal is to locate and replace any burned out lights. Turn on the lights on the tree. Starting at the top, trace the wire for the light string and make sure each light is functioning. If you find a non-working light, immediately replace the bulb. If you run out of bulbs, then mark the non-working light with brightly color string or tape for replacement when you get more bulbs.

Why?

It is critical to locate lights which are not working. The more lights which are not working on a light string, the more electricity the working lights have to consume. For example, if you have a 50 light set, each light consumes 1/50th of the electricity in the string. If 10 lights are not working, the 40 lights which are working are forced to take 20% more electricity. If this situation continues, the light string is permanently damaged. The lights will not work and each of the lights have a brown tinge. Light manufactures do not cover this type of damage in their warranty.

2. Un-Fluff Tree

Please note the following applies to the PVC style (“bottle brush”) Christmas tree. It does not apply as much to the realistic Christmas tree.

How Long?

About 10-15 minutes for a 7. 5′ Christmas tree.

What?

The goal is to compress the branches of the tree in an orderly fashion to preserve the lights, needles and branches.

To help understand what we are working with, look at the bottom row of branches on the tree. For a 7. 5′ tree, there is usually 6-8 main branches attached to the center pole. Each of these main branches have baby branches attached. Below, wediscuss how to fold the baby branches back to the main branch. This is why we call it un-fluffing. When you put the tree up, you fluffed or styled the tree to make it full and pretty. Now we want to make it skinny.

Starting at the outer, top of the tree, carefully fold the baby branches toward the larger main branches. Work your way around the top branches and then move down to the next row of branches until the entire tree is un-fluffed.

Why?

It is a common mistake to simply put the tree back in the box without un-fluffing the tree. This causes problems compressing the tree into a smaller space. By folding the baby branches toward the main branch, the tree fits into a smaller space and the needles / branches are less likely to be damaged.

3. Disassembly

How Long?

About 10-15 minutes for a 7. 5′ Christmas tree.

What?

Remove the top section of the tree. Turn the top upside down and gently press the branches toward the center pole. Lay the top on its side out of the way for a moment. (don’t put it in the bag / box yet)

Remove the center section(s) of the tree. Turn the section(s) upside down and gently press the branches toward the center pole. Lay the middle section(s) on their side out of the way for a moment. (don’t put it in the bag / box yet)

Loosen the bolts on the tree stand and remove the bottom section. Turn the bottom section upside down and gently press the branches toward the center pole.

If you have a strong twine or cloth covered bungee cords, it is a good idea to wrap the bottom and middle sections with twine or bungee cord to further compress the tree. You do not want to make it too tight but just a little compression makes the next step easier.

Caution

Make sure that when you are folding the branches toward the center pole that the light strings do not get caught or pinched in the hinges. If the branches are not easily folding toward the center pole, do not force it.

4. Placement in Box or Bag

The last step is to place the tree in a box or Christmas tree storage bag. Should you store the tree in the original box or a Christmas tree storage bag?The best answer is both. Buy the storage bag, put the tree in the storage bag and then put the bag in the box. Many people store their trees in the attic. It is much easier to get the tree in the attic when the tree is in the hard sided box. The tree bag protects the tree against the elements and dust.

How Long?

About 10-15 minutes for a 7. 5′ Christmas tree

What?

Place the bottom section into the box / bag first. If you still have the plastic end cap, place it over the end which goes in the tree stand. The cap will help prevent this pointed end from going through the side.

Position the bottom section so the pointed end of the center pole is in the middle of the bag and the non-pointed end is at one end of the box/bag or the other.

Position the middle section so the widest part of the section is at the other end of the box/bag.

Position the top section, tree stand and any other parts in the middle of the box / bag.

5. Store the Box or Bag

The following are the general guidelines when storing an artificial Christmas tree. Frosted, flocked or white Christmas trees are particularly sensitive to extreme temperatures and humidity. These types of trees dis-color rapidly in hot and humid storage conditions.

Temperature – 40 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit

Humidity – As low as possible.

No animals – Birds, mice and rats love to live in artificial Christmas trees.

Welcome Number 7

BUTLER, Mo – The Butler City Council opened Tuesday evening with the appointment and swearing in of Gayle Cook (number 7), who will complete the term of Shawn McVey from Ward 4, who then sat down and business of the evening began.

Edwin Nelson came before the Council in regards to extending his building permit. After some discussion with Mr. Nelson and Chief Jim Henry it was decided that Mr. Nelson down not need to extend his current building permit since everything on the outside of his home has been reviewed and it is up to code. Henry further stated that if he needed an additional permit later on, he could apply for one at that time.

The Butler Optimist Club received permission to use the old High School gymnasium for an upcoming dodgeball tournament on Saturday, January 10th. The city waived the rent and also cautioned to be careful of the floor, and if there is any damage, they would be responsible for that damage.

The Personnel Committee met at 6:30 to discuss the Senior Taxi guidelines. No written agreement between the City of Butler and the Senior Center has been found. The Committee asked Tom Addleman, City Attorney, to draft an agreement for review and he will present that to Council at a later date.

Casey Koehn, acting City Administrator updated Council on several items – the CDBG demo project is slowly progressing. Kaysinger has sent the notarized bond information to the bond company and waiting to hear back from them. ALM Environmental is currently in the underwriting stage for bonding, as soon as received the asbestos removal process can proceed.

Koehn also reminded Council election filings began on December 16th and will run through January 20th. A new form needs to be completed this year and sent to the state for anyone who files as a candidate for election to a public office. That person will be disqualified in the election if he/she is delinquent in the payment of any state income taxes, personal property taxes, real property taxes on the place of residence as stated on the declaration of candidacy, or if the person is a past or present corporate officer of any fee office that owes any taxes to the state. Mo Form 5120 needs to be signed and notarized for each candidate filing in the April 2015 election.

Koehn also asked permission to review the utility policy regarding customers bringing in a medical statement, if they are delinquent in their utilities, stating that utilities are required for their medical condition. Also reviewing the adjustments made on water bills caused by leaks that caused their bill to be 2 times the average consumption for the previous 12 months. She received permission to sit down with department heads to rewrite the policy and then bring the policy back to Council for discussion or approval.

Discussion during the December 2nd Council meeting regarding renaming the South Park to C.A. Moore Park was also discussed. Trent Diehl and Mary Jo Cook found minutes from January 18, 1966 regarding the purchase of $2,000 worth of land by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ott that was given to enlarge the Jaycee Park. Currently Koehn is looking for members of the Ott family to discuss renaming the park.

Police Chief Randy Beshore told Council the Department had received a grant in the amount of $8,800.61 and will used to put 4 cages in police cars at a cost of $1,600 each. Fire Chief Jim Henry also brought two bids to Council to purchase a Light Duty Rescue Apparatus to replace the 1987 unit currently in service. After much discussion, the bid from Maintainer Custom Bodies was approved at a cost of $143,606.78.

Burglary Prevention

CASS COUNTY, Mo – On December 12, 2014 the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of two burglaries in the Belton area near 171st and Holmes Rd. In this incident and similar incidents around Cass County the suspects usually approach the residence during the day and knock on the door. If they encounter a homeowner the subject will engage the person with “small talk” and ask various questions about directions to a nearby town or highway, or performing odd jobs around the house. These subjects will continue this until they find a house where no one is home. Residents are encouraged to contact the Cass County Sheriff’s Office or local police department to report any suspicious behavior.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office urges citizens, especially at this time of the year to be aware of your surroundings and to keep your doors locked and garage doors closed even when you at home.

Many people are making plans to be out of town for extended periods of time this holiday season. During this time our homes are more susceptible to burglaries. While most people notify neighbors here are a few other things to do before going:

Be discreet about going away to reduce the risk of burglars

Set timers, to make your house appears occupied

Lock windows and doors

Leave spare keys/contact number with someone you trust

For long periods of travel, have the post office hold your mail

Stop paper delivers, and make arrangements for parcels to be picked up

If your car is alarmed, leave spare keys with a neighbor

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office also provides a “House Watch”. If you leave town contact 380-5200 and have the following information ready:

Your name and address

Emergency number

Date leaving/returning and times

If the mail and newspapers have been stopped

Vehicles left in garage or driveway and description

Lights left on, where they are located and if they are on timers

Anyone with permission to be on the property (checking house/pets)

And local emergency contact name and phone number

This information is then disseminated to every deputy in the Sheriff’s Office. This allows for deputies to check your house periodically while you are away to help give you an extra piece of mind while you are enjoying a well-deserved vacation. The “House Watch” program typically increases during the summer and winter months, however it can be used anytime of the year.

Be On Guard During Holiday Season

The Butler Police Department would like to remind everyone not to leave packages in plain view in your vehicles while at shopping malls.

Put packages in your trunk or cover them with something if your trunk is not available. Also do not leave empty boxes of Christmas presents outside by the curb after they have been opened. You are just advertising to everyone what you got for Christmas.

If possible break the boxes up. Always lock your vehicle and your home regardless of how long you will be gone.

Also don’t advertise what you received for Christmas on social media, everyone will know what you received; this makes it easy for burglars to know what is in your home that is worth stealing.

Be safe and cautious during the holiday season.

Be On Guard During Holiday Season

Scam Artists Busy

BATES COUNTY, Mo With the Holiday season upon us, it has brought out the “Scam Artists” working in full force. They are hacking into people’s e-mails, calling people with bogus information and doing everything in their power to get your personal information.

E-mails you receive from people you don’t know asking for help because they are in trouble and only you can help them is always a scam, don’t be fooled.

If someone calls you on the telephone asking for your personal information, stating something like your utilities may be turned off, or state they are trying to collect a debt, never give your information out over the phone. Once they have your information they can do anything they want with it.

Be aware and always guard your personal information. Make sure what and who you are responding to is the genuine article.

Honor a Friend of the City

BUTLER, MO – During the Butler City Council meeting Tuesday evening, Mayor Don Malan brought a suggestion to the council regarding honor C.A. Moore, a true friend of the City of Butler. He suggested renaming one of the city parks as the C.A. Moore Memorial Park perhaps with a stone marker or a wooden plaque. Details still need to be worked out and the project will be discussed further at the next Council meeting.

The Park and Recreation Commission requested $2,000 to purchase dirt for the baseball field at the Fairgrounds and the request was granted. Any additional dirt left over will be used on the REA Field. Permission was also granted to begin construction at Sunset Park. The cost for this will be minimal since the play equipment has already been purchased. Sunset Park is located in the lot behind Don’s Tire on the west side of the street.

In old business regarding the Senior Taxi policy, it was decided to call a personnel meeting at 6:30 before the meeting on December 16th to look at the policy. This stems from a request made to the Council regarding making an exception on the age requirement eligible to ride in the taxi.

Acting City Administrator, Casey Koehn told Council the demo project is going slowly. Some progress has been made as deeds for 4 houses have been received from the Recorder of Deeds and have been forwarded to CDBG. Of the 11 houses that owe back property taxes, 2 have paid and other owners still owing taxes said they would come in and pay. One house is titled in a deceased man’s name and 2 houses have liens on them, with law firms as the lien holder. One firm agreed to send a letter which would allow the demo of the house and Casey is still negotiation with the second firm.

The subject of surety bond came up since the contract price for the removal of asbestos came in over $25,000 and CDBG requires a surety bond from ALM Environmental. Kaysinger is working on a change order to pay for the surety bond. Currently 17 houses are ready for asbestos removal and 5 houses are ready for demo.

Mike Taranto of Solar Shade USA met with Casey and Trent Diehl to tour the City Parks. The budget for shelters will be looked at and Solar Shade will bring designs and fabrics to choose from for the shelters. Along with providing shelter from the sun, the structures will be colorful and bring a distinct design element to the Butler City Parks.

The research into the high sewer rates continues and a clear concise history of the rates going back to 1999 and the EPA regulations placed on the city in the past and regulations that are to come. The council will be informed of the research as it continues.

An ad was placed in the newspaper requesting bids for one medium duty rescue truck for the Butler Fire Department; $140,000 was budged for this item. Once bids have been received Fire Chief Jim Henry will bring them to Council.

Trent Diehl, Director of Public Works told Council the Parks Department FY 2014-2015 budget includes $15,500 to purchase a new lawn mower. Scott Bitner, Parks and Recreation Superintendent, requested they not purchase a more expensive front mount deck mower but instead purchase two new Scag mowers due to electrical issues the department had with one of their newer Scag mowers from last year. The bid from Cross Roads Sales and Service came in at $14,650 and the council approved the request.

Casey brought to the Council’s attention a citizen had been given bad information regarding a permit for a trailer in Hooterville. The Planning Commission will work with the citizen regarding the permit and try to get it resolved.

Girl Scout Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Patties Now On The Web

Starting December 12th customers can order cookies from scouts online for the first time ever and have the boxes shipped directly to your home. The organization also has a new app that will point you to local troops’ booth sales in your area.

The 102-year-old nonprofit’s decision to go digital might just be the great leveler—not only for people who want to buy the cookies, but for the girls selling them.

Now, all a Girl Scout will need to do to sell a box of cookies is to know someone’s e-mail address, which she can use to “invite” the person to her personalized web page. The page will be hosted on the Girl Scouts’ “Digital Cookie” platform, where buyers can do their own ordering and use a credit card to pay. The scout’s personal information will be limited to her first name, and whatever else she puts on her (parent-approved) website.
girls scout cookies

It’s a whole different era of Girl Scout Cookie-selling hustle, one that has more to do with collecting e-mail addresses and digital sales than it does with where your parents physically work or your pre-teen sales patter. On the downside, raising the technological bar for participation might make it even more difficult for girls from poorer families, and give a sizable advantage to those from tech-savvy households. And, of course, we might all need to get ready for an onslaught of “Buy my cookies” spam.

But if a scout prefers to go door to door or deal directly with buyers, she can still do that. Only now, she’ll have a mobile app she can use to take orders.

Missouri Minimum Wage Rate in Effect January 1st

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – The Missouri Department of Labor announces the state minimum wage rate for 2015 has been established, according to state law, at $7.65, effective January 1.

All businesses are required to pay at minimum, the $7.65 hourly rate, except retail and service businesses whose annual gross sales are less than $500,000. Per state law, the minimum wage rate is calculated once a year and may increase or decrease based on the cost of living as measured by the previous year’s Consumer Price Index. Missouri law does not allow the state’s minimum wage rate to be lower than the federal minimum wage rate.

Compensation for tipped employees must also total at least $7.65 per hour. Employers are required to pay tipped employees at least 50 percent of the minimum wage, or the amount necessary to bring the employee’s total compensation to a minimum of $7.65 per hour.

UPDATE: Suspect Charged With First Degree Murder

HARRISONVILLE, Mo. — A suspect has been charged with first degree murder after a body was found in a rural area of Cass County.

James N. Rhymer, 31, faces charges of Murder 1st Degree and Armed Criminal Action in the death of David Mendez.

On Friday, November 28th, Cass County Sheriff’s deputies discovered Mendez’s body in a field near 283rd Street in Cass County, very close to I-49.

Cass County Sheriff’s deputies, Kansas City, Mo., Police officers and Independence Police officers were all on the scene Friday for the investigation.

The Cass County medical examiner removed Mendez’s body from the scene at about 4 p.m. in order to perform an autopsy to positively identify him and determine his cause of death.

According to court documents, sources say Rhymer fatally shot the victim while he was in the back seat of a dark colored SUV. He then poured gasoline on the victim and enlisted the help of a witness, who claimed he did so at gun point, to dispose of the victim’s body.

Officers later discovered Mendez’s body with an apparent gunshot wound and also located a burned pickup truck, which was discovered at a separate location.

Rhymer was located at an apartment in Kansas City, Missouri, where officers say he barricaded himself inside his apartment while armed, however just before 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, Rhymer surrendered to police without injury. He was arrested and then transported to the Kansas City Police Headquarters, where he is currently being held.
