Prosecutors in Linn County have filed charges against Ronald Scott Michels, a teacher in Pleasanton, a town of 1,200.

Michels, 54, was an elementary school teacher in the Pleasanton Unified School District until last Thursday. Then he resigned.

The same day he was charged by the Linn County Prosecutor’s Office with electronic solicitation promoting obscenity and harassment by a telecommunications device. It is alleged to have all happened with a 15-year-old girl who is a student in the district.

Investigators say Michels engaged in a text conversation with the teen first about a ballgame and then subjects much more graphic in nature. According to the affidavit, the chat has Michels asking the teen to think about him when she goes to bed, but the topic of conversation gets even more sexual:

Michels: “I had a dream about u the other night”

Teen: “What about me?”

Michels: “It was great then I woke up”

Teen: “What was it about?”

Michels: “Do you really want to know?”

Teen: “Yes.”

Michels: “R u at home and can u keep a secret if I tell you?”

Teen: “Yes and yes”

Michels: (Describes a sex act)

Michels: “Keep our texting to yourself.”

People in Pleasanton, like a woman who didn’t want to be identified, said they were shocked by the arrest of the longtime teacher.

“I was, I was floored. I never in my mind would I think that something like this would happen, especially having him as a teacher myself. I never thought, never,” she said.

Former student Adrianne Wisdom is thinking of her friends and family.

“Everybody just kind of believes that he just needs to be in trouble for it,” she said. “It almost makes you want to ask, ‘Did he ever do that to you?’ Like ask all of your friends and your siblings, ‘Did he ever make a suggestion to you or something?’”

Michels is out on a $20,000 bond. KCTV5’s attempts to talk to him Tuesday were unsuccessful.

He’ll be in a Linn County courtroom on March 4 for his first appearance before a judge.
