Show-Me Sheep and Goat Project
“With the ability to have more profit potential than most other enterprises, sheep and goat producers sometimes have problems marketing their animals or products,” says Susan Jaster of the Lincoln University Innovative Small Farms Outreach Program. If you want to raise sheep or goats for meat or milk, you can learn how to raise and market them successfully from this series of classes. This four week program will allow participants the ability to learn how to run their sheep and goat operation as a business. It will also allow participants to learn how to manage their sheep and goats to enhance productivity.
This series of classes is for beginners or experienced producers as well as those looking to enter into another farming enterpise to increase revenues. When more than one kind of livestock graze a pasture, there can be several advantages gained. Grazing more than one species on a unit of land can more fully utilize the plants available and produce more meat (and profit) from that unit. This type of multi-species grazing behavior is also healthier for the land and forage, keeping the various types of plants in better ecological balance.
The Show-Me Sheep and Goat Project course includes 4 evening classes on: May 21, May 28, June 4, and June 9. The classes will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Cass County Extension Center in Harrisonville, MO (201 West Wall St., Harrisonville, MO 64701).
The program includes a wide variety of educational topics for both beginning and experienced producers. Topics to be covered will include: the sheep and goat industry, selection of breeding stock, pasture management, marketing, diseases in sheep and goats, and business relationships.
Class size is not limited but registration is required by May 20th. The cost of the classes is $30 per person or $50 per couple/entity with refreshments and materials provided. If participants need special accommodations because of a disability, or if you need materials in an alternative format, please inform at time of registration.
For registration and additional information, contact Nathanial Cahill University of Missouri Agricultural Business Specialist at 660-747-3193 (135 W. Market, Warrensburg, MO) or cahilln@missouri.edu.

Those were the words spoken by Tom Davis, Chairman of MC Power, at the dedication of the Butler Solar Energy Farm on Friday, April 25th.
Tom Davis and Loren Williamson, VP of MC Power Companies both commended the Butler City Council, Mayor Don Malan and former City Administrator Mark Arbethnot, who kept the vision even through stumbling blocks, kept the faith and also noted it was that dedication and vision that brought state and local dignitaries as well as community leaders on Friday to the dedication of this achievement.
The unveiling of the plaque commemorating the partnership of MC Power, Missouri Public Utilities Alliance, Missouri Joint Municipal Electric Utility Commission and the City of Butler will stand at the entrance of the Solar Farm.
Next to the plaque is an original antique lamp post, used long ago to light Ohio Street, and now using solar energy to light the very same lamp post. Butler Police Department News Release
Officers observed the suspect’s vehicle in Wilson Tire’s parking lot traveling westbound. Officers attempted to stop the suspect, 43 year old Donald Michael Cooper, and the green Dodge Caravan fled through Country Mart’s parking lot at a high rate of speed, then drove across Sunset Street, continuing westbound between Don’s Tires and the Sear’s store in the grass. Officers located the Green Van stuck in the mud on the south side of the Days Inn Hotel building unoccupied.
Officers then drove behind the Days Inn Hotel to locate the suspect, but noticed a broken window leading into a room. Officers entered room 112 and located the keys to the suspect’s vehicle on the ground of the room in the broken glass. The hotel was evacuated and a perimeter was set up around the building by the Bates County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri Highway Patrol and the Butler Police Department.
The Bates County TAC Team made entry and searched the hotel locating Cooper hiding in a bathroom closest on the first floor. The hotel was searched for any additional suspects, but none were found. A review of the hotel’s security video showed Cooper walking in and hiding in the bathroom. Contraband and other evidence was located in his vehicle. After processing the crime scene a Kansas City, Kansas Police Badge was found in the closet where Cooper was hiding, but the suspect was not a law enforcement officer.
Cooper was placed into the Bates County Jail and he is charged with burglary, felony resisting arrest, forgery, possession of forgery instrumentality, attempted forgery of a blank checks, possession of open container of alcohol, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana. During the criminal investigation it was discovered that Cooper has several aliases and has a extensive criminal past.
The Butler Police Department wishes to thank everyone for their help and also apologizes for the inconvenience during this incident. The Butler Police Department will always error on the side of caution to keep its citizens safe from harm.

Pool Pals: Sponsor a Child This Summer
Last year, they were able to buy season passes for 76 children. The program is successful due to the generosity of businesses, organizations, and the people of Bates County. B.C.Y.A.C. serves as a link by gathering donations for the pool passes and then providing them to children in the community. A list of children is compiled and then given to the B.C.Y.A.C. and the council works its way down the list as money comes in. We trust the groups that give us the names of these children. These groups know the children and know their needs.
The cost of sponsoring a child is:
Individual Pass 7 and under - $30
Individual Pass 8 and older - $70
Family of Two - $140
Family of Three - $180
Family of Four - $220
Family of Five - $260
Any and all donations will be appreciated whether you can donate $5 or want to sponsor an entire family. BCYAC will work it out by combining donations or buying family passes whichever way they can, to insure that many children will benefit.
If you are interested in donating money to the Pool Pals Program, mail your donation to:

"SOS" Save Our Steinway
"S.O.S." has taken on a new meaning in Butler and Bates County. It stands for "Save Our Steinway." The goal of the Bates County Museum is to restore like new, its Steinway Grand Piano that was built shortly after the Civil War. People who heard about the project are already interested. This is an heirloom of the Doctor Elliott Pyle family and its descendants. Dr. Pyle was a renowned Civil War surgeon who came to Butler after the war. He's believed to be the original owner of the musical masterpiece. If a piano could talk, this grand piano could tell stories that might change the area's history. But like a person with a strong heart that has aged, this highlight of the museum needs renovation. It will cost $41 thousand dollars, plus various other expenses involved, but will be valued at $90 thousand when the renovation is done. With this in mind, a group of citizens met on Sunday afternoon to discuss how to finance this task. The piano is a museum piece and will of course be located in our museum, which is an historical piece itself. It will be used in local projects, visiting guest performers and others. Authorities, who know museums, count ours as one of the best. There'll be much more concerning this awesome project and you'll be advised as to how you may contribute to this tax-deductible task.

How to Prepare for a Tornado
How to Prepare for a Tornado
During any storm, listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay informed about tornado watches and warnings.
Know your community's warning system. Communities have different ways of warning residents about tornados, with many having sirens intended for outdoor warning purposes.
Pick a safe room in your home where household members and pets may gather during a tornado. This should be a basement, storm cellar or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows.
Practice periodic tornado drills so that everyone knows what to do if a tornado is approaching.
Consider having your safe room reinforced. Plans for reinforcing an interior room to provide better protection can be found on the FEMA web site.
Prepare for high winds by removing diseased and damaged limbs from trees.
Move or secure lawn furniture, trash cans, hanging plants or anything else that can be picked up by the wind and become a projectile.
Watch for tornado danger signs:
Dark, often greenish clouds – a phenomenon caused by hail
Wall cloud – an isolated lowering of the base of a thunderstorm
Cloud of debris
Large hail
Funnel cloud – a visible rotating extension of the cloud base
Roaring noise
