Coach’s Comments

“Tonight we were able to do something that we haven’t achieved in the past two seasons- ensure a winning dual season. With the opponents that we have remaining in our final 5 duals, we could all but guarantee a winning dual record tonight with 2 wins. Our dual schedule strength isn’t incredible, but with as many open weight classes as we have shown during the season, this is a remarkable achievement by this group. A few of our wrestlers went to the well too many times on one or two moves that weren’t working for them during the Diamond dual. Lessons learned hopefully. Sheer roster size all but determined that we would win the dual no matter what, though. We had a rematch dual against El Dorado Springs, a team that we wrestled three weeks ago here at Butler, where we lost a rough dual on a disappointing night. We showed more resilience this time around, facing a few new opponents and also missing one of our normal starters due to illness. Young wrestlers had to step up and bump around to give us hope. Dylan Morris wrestled a terrific tactical match at 152 in the El Dorado Springs dual, giving us one of the 2 swing matches we really needed for the win. However, we lost a very winnable match at 160 in the same dual which put things on the ropes again. In the final match of the night, Kenton Taylor (138) had to chase down his opponent most of the first period of his match, finally getting in a good ride and securing the fall to tie things up. Then, based on tie-breaker criteria, we locked up the win by a single point- 28-27. This isn’t a team of superstars, but this is a team of every-day kids who work hard with good attitudes- every day. They deserved to win these duals, and they deserve their new distinction as the group who turned us back into a winning dual team this season.
