BATES COUNTY, Mo – In July of 2014 Bates County Collector/Treasurer Jim Platt was nominated by the Missouri Association of Counties to serve on the National Association of Counties (NACO) steering committee for Agriculture and Rural Development.
Platt is pleased to report that the committee has had a very successful year. Together, the committee and NACO in conjunction with other farm organizations were successful in stopping the Corps of Engineers plan to require permits to dig a pond or a ditch that is considered a normal farm process, and have continued to fight against additional cuts in funding to USDA Rural Development.
The committee is in strong support for continuing to fund USDA Rural Development and Rural Transportation. This is an important issue as forty five percent of all roads and bridges in the US are built and maintained by counties.
It is Platt’s opinion that the #1 business of Bates County is Agriculture. Bates County generates over 100 million dollars a year in agricultural based sales, mainly from cattle and grain. Platt states “I am very pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of the effort to preserve and promote our number one industry, our farmers and ranchers.”
