Cass County Sheriff’s Office Host 8th Annual DARE Camp

Cass Co. – D.A.R.E. Officers from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Harrisonville Police Department and Archie Police Department spent Monday preparing for the 8th Annual DARE Camp in Harrisonville. The Sheriff’s Office will host more than 70 students from around the county for the 3 day camp. The focus of the camp is to reinforce the DARE message and this year’s theme, “Be a Champion” will help identify and provide positive alternative activities to drug use and delinquent behavior. Camp will include some of the traditional camp activities, as well as team building events. The camp is structured to build within each student a positive impression of deputy sheriffs, police officers, military and emergency personnel, many of whom will be directly involved with the camp in some capacity.

DARE Camp will kick off Tuesday morning in the Cass County Sheriff’s Office at 8:00 am with a special message from Cass County teachers and principals.

The camp is made possible in part from a donation from the Cass County Elks Lodge #2791 and numerous local businesses.

Fireworks Safety

From: Jim Henry, Fire Chief / Emergency Management Director

American traditions of parades, cookouts, and fireworks help us celebrate the summer season, especially the Fourth of July.

Fireworks can, however, turn a joyful holiday into a painful memory when children or adults are injured while incorrectly using fireworks.

It is estimated that over 8,700 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms in 2012 for injuries associated with fireworks.

Approximately 50% of the injuries are burns, and most of the injuries involve the hands, eyes, or head.

Nearly half of the victims are under the age of fifteen.

To reduce the risk of injury from fireworks, use them with caution and follow some basic safety rules:

  1. Read and follow all instructions and warnings.

  2. Sparklers, considered by many to be safe, burn at very high temperatures, can easily ignite clothing, and stay hot long after burning out. They can be as dangerous to children as lighters and matches. Be sure to collect all burned out sparkler wires for proper disposal.

  3. Only older children should be allowed to use fireworks under close supervision. Younger children should not be allowed to play with fireworks.

  4. Never allow running or horseplay when using fireworks.

  5. Use lighters with a child resistant feature. Keep matches and lighters away from smaller children.

  6. Light fireworks outdoors, one at a time. Light them on a clear, smooth, flat surface away from buildings, dry vegetation, or flammable materials.

  7. Keep water nearby for emergencies.

  8. Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Douse and soak them with water and throw them away.

  9. Be sure other people and pets are out of range before igniting fireworks.

  10. Never experiment with fireworks or ignite them in a glass or metal container.

  11. Never try to make your own fireworks.

  12. Keep unused fireworks away from firing areas.

  13. Store fireworks in a cool, dry place, away from sources of ignition, and out of reach of children.

Be aware of what fireworks are allowed in your area, and rules for their possession and use.

The Butler Fire Department and City of Butler Emergency Management Agency would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Independence Day. Please use common sense by following basic safety rules.

No Health Fair This Year

The Bates County Memorial Hospital will not sponsor a health fair this year as in year’s past. The following is a news release from Ed Hannon, Bates County Memorial Hospital’s CEO:

Following the Passage of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), with the mandate for individuals to obtain healthcare coverage through the insurance exchanges and the anticipated Medicaid expansion where most Americans would have access to preventative healthcare coverage, the hospital prepared an operational budget without the community screening program as was historically done at the hospital health fair.

The hospital continues to assist patients and community members in a number of ways. The hospital provides expertise to our patients in assisting them with financial assistance. Lisa Tenholder, Certified Application Counselor, can assist patients to apply for health insurance through the Insurance Exchange. She helps individuals with the application process and help them obtain accurate out of pocket cost information, instead of the relying on much of the myths that have been circulating about these plans. Additionally, Lisa can provide them with other financial assistance to determine if they would be eligible for programs such as Medicaid or disability.

The enrollment through the Affordable Care Act opens again in October of this year. We encourage members of the public to call Lisa at 660-200-7314 or contact an independent insurance representative in the community. In the event patients cannot qualify for insurance products, Medicare, Medicaid or other programs, the hospital continues to offer charity care for those who meet the criteria. So far in 2014, the hospital has provided in excess of 1 million dollars in charity care.

Red Cross Summer Safety Tips

Fourth of July weekend, many people will be traveling, firing up the backyard grill or enjoying fireworks and the American Red Cross offers a series of steps everyone can follow to safely enjoy the holiday weekend.

HIGHWAY SAFETY

Millions of people will be on the highways over the Fourth of July weekend. The Red Cross offers these five things everyone should do to stay safe while traveling:

• Buckle seat belts, observe speed limits.

• Do not drink and drive.

• Pay full attention to the road – don’t use a cell phone to call or text.

• Use caution in work zones.

• Clean the vehicle’s lights and windows to help the driver see, especially at night. Turn the headlights on as dusk approaches, or during inclement weather.

FIREWORKS SAFETY

The best way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals.

Here are five safety steps for people setting fireworks off at home:

• Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging.

• Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution.

• Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection.

• Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight “a dud.”

• Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.

GRILLING SAFETY

Every year people are injured while using charcoal or gas grills. Here are several steps to safely cook up treats for the backyard barbecue:

• Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use.

• Never grill indoors – not in the house, camper, tent, or any enclosed area.

• Make sure everyone, including the pets, stays away from the grill.

• Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, the deck, tree branches, or anything that could catch fire.

• Use the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill to keep the chef safe.

All of this fun will take place on Saturday, June 28th; doors will open at 11am. If team roping isn’t your cup of team then you can play “Chicken Droppings Bingo” where you can buy a 3 inch square and hope the chicken visits your square.

There is no admission to this fun day where they will have food, mouse races, and a pie in the face auction.

All of this takes place at the Bates County Elks Lodge at 1000 Elks Drive in Butler and all proceeds will benefit Youth and Veterans Programs.
