STOCKTON, Mo. – Joshua Brown, the driver of a car who fled from an attempted traffic stop in El Dorado Springs, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder after his passenger and a sheriff’s deputy died in a shootout with each other. Brown, 28, of El Dorado Springs is accused of causing the two deaths while committing another felony.
On Sunday, November 2nd Cedar County Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew Chism tried to pull over the driver for having no headlights. The driver sped off and the deputy chased the car through town. At Hickory at High streets, law enforcement officers say, passenger William Collins, 28, of El Dorado Springs, jumped out of the car, which left the scene.
Chism chased Collins on foot, they fought, and there was an exchange of gunfire. Chism, 25, died at an area hospital. Collins died at the scene.
Officers arrested Brown at his home in El Dorado Springs. The probable cause statement against him says the car that Chism tried to stop was parked outside Brown’s home when he was arrested.
After his arrest Brown admitted to investigators that he was driving the car that fled from Chism, and that he knew a semi-automatic pistol was in the car. He described it as a .45-caliber handgun, which matches the description of a gun found by officers, who believe it’s also the weapon used by Collins to shoot Chism. Brown has eight criminal convictions, including two for possession of a controlled substance.
Chism had a wife and a small child. He had been with the Cedar County Sheriff’s Department since January 2013.
