Thank a Farmer Week, February 2-8
FM92 would like celebrate Missouri Farm Bureau’s “Thank a Farm Week.” This is a celebration of the U.S. food supply as provided by America’s farmers and ranchers.
Farmers and ranch families only make up 2 percent of the United States population, yet they produce food for the world.
Of every retail dollar spent for food, 81 cents goes for marketing expenses. This includes processing, packaging, wholesaling, distributing, transporting, and retailing food products. The remaining 19 cents goes back to the farmer who uses it to pay for operating costs in providing raw products for food. The farmer’s share is used to purchase farm equipment, fertilizer, fuel, seed, feed and other input costs.
Thank a Farmer Week is an appropriate time to ‘thank a farmer’! As a career, they have chosen to spend their livelihood providing food and fiber for our nation and abroad. Those of us in Bates County and other rural counties would like to take the time to just say “Thank You” to the farmers for all they do to help feed our families.

Propane Prices on the Rise
BUTLER, MO - The price of propane continued to climb on Friday, making it difficult for many to stay warm. Among the hardest hit are farmers.
Some parts of the country are rationing propane, at a time when many farmers need a refill.
The spike has been blamed on a supply problem caused by farmers using propane-fueled equipment last fall to dry wet grain, as well as a bitterly cold winter and the temporary shutdown of a major supply pipeline in December.
Several propane users are calling on the Missouri attorney general to launch an investigation to see whether there is any price gouging. The Missouri Propane Gas Association is asking the U.S. Justice Department to launch its own investigation.
If your concerned you are urged to call the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-392-8222.

BBB Warns of Latest One-Ring Phone Scam
BATES COUNTY - The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers of a phone scam dubbed the “473 Scam” or the “One-Ring Scam.”
According to the BBB, a large number of people throughout the United States have been receiving phone calls from a 473 area code located out of Grenada in the Caribbean.
In the scam, a blast of robocalls are sent to cell phones, but the phones only ring once. The scammers hope to spike people’s curiosity and have them dial the number back. In calling the number back, the victim of the scam could be charged $20 or more.
The 473 area code functions like a 1-900 number, charging callers $19.95 for an international call fee. The longer a person waits on the line, the more they are charged. Most of this money goes straight to the scammers.
According to an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “Many cell phone carriers allow you to block calls for free on your cell phone. One way to do this is to go to your call log and add the number to a reject or blocked number list.”
ScamCallFighters has a detailed list of 473 numbers that have been reported as scam calls.
If you have received one of these calls, you may report it to the Missouri Attorney General (800-392-8222) and/or the Federal Trade Commission (877-382-4357).

WOW
BUTLER, MO - FM92 feels like Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong when he became the first man to set foot on the surface of the moon and said “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Over the past several months, changes have been made and boy are we excited. The radio station has a brand new website www.921news.com and when you go to our website you will see this lovely button that says “Listen Live” and when you click on that button, either on your computer or on your phone and there we are.
These changes would not be possible without the dedicated, hard work of Brandon Craft, former fm92 employee who designed our new website. He has literally put in weeks of working and perfecting the website to make it the work of art that it is today.
Thanks also to Kent Long of PC Technologies, our IT Tech Support genius who has done everything behind the scenes to make sure all of our equipment is performing at its best.
We also have a new Facebook page – 921news – go to it and like it, we would appreciate it and that way you are always up to date on the latest accident or school closing or just find out what is happening in our area.
From our humble beginnings of am radio to the addition of the fm side in 1975 and now in 2014 the addition of streaming live from our station we can honestly say “we’ve come a long way baby.”
We thank all of you who have stayed with us during all these years, without you the listeners and the wonderful advertisers that make it possible for all of us to do our job of hopefully bringing you the very best programming that we can. To say “thanks” seems so simple, but it is truly from our hearts

Butler City Council News, January 21, 2014
BUTLER, MO - In Butler City Council news, Shannon Barth attended the meeting this week to ask the Council for permission to hold the annual Relay for Life activity on the Butler square, and she got the ok for this June 7th.
And concerning the Welston Bates County Disposal sanitation contract, the Council noted that their contract is binding and must stay as is until time for renewal.
The Finance Committee has had another meeting on the next year’s fiscal year budget. This is a long and difficult subject and will continue until this summer, as the various departments note their needs for the coming year.
Another subject that hangs fire is Resolution 409, which has to do with Missouri cities and their control over their city poles and use of them by telephone, cable, and others attaching to them. Butler is one of many Missouri communities that are against 409.
The Bates County Economic Development Commission has met again to discuss priorities on our county’s roads and bridges projects. Top priority is installing an interchange at Missouri TT and I-49 and the need for access to Butler’s Industrial Park and the airport. Other top
priorities include work on Missouri Highway 18...shoulders, repaving and safety stripes are needed.
Butler’s housing demolition project is currently in the “environmental assessment” stage.
And the Council understands our day-to-day problems, and will adjust the sewer rate for the Mark Heckadon address, which occurred due to a leak.

Bates County Sheriff President of Southwest Major Case Squad
Beginning January 1, 2014, new offices are assigned for the members of the Southwest Major Case Squad. Chief Graham Burnley of the Nevada Police Department turned the President position over to Sheriff Chad Anderson of Bates County. Chief Burnley has served as President of the Major Case Squad for the year of 2013. Sheriff Anderson shall serve as the President until January of 2015 when Vice President Chief Ron Hagar will assume the position. The Major Case Squad is governed by a Board of Directors from the participating jurisdictions.
The Southwest Major Case Squad is composed of Law Enforcement agencies in the Southwest area of Missouri. Those agencies consist of Bates County Sheriff’s Office, Butler Police Department, Rich Hill Police Department, Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Police Department, Barton County Sheriff’s Office, Lamar Police Department, St. Clair Sheriff’s Office, Cedar County Sheriff’s Office, Eldorado Springs Police Department, Dade County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Each of these agencies has agreed to provide manpower and resources to the other agencies in the event of a Major Crime. Each agency has identified their own staff members who have extensive experience and training in investigations. Those staff members are then dispatched to a neighboring agency when the Major Case Squad had been activated. There is no cost associated with being a member of the Major Case Squad except each agency covers the cost of the employees activated during investigations.
Sheriff Anderson says, “Being a member of the Major Case Squad has been a benefit to my agency on many levels. Since being Sheriff, I have activated the Squad two times to help investigate homicides that have occurred here. Activating the Squad gives agencies numerous experienced investigators that are able to follow up leads to a major case in a timely matter. Time is a factor in solving a major crime like a missing person or a homicide.”
The Southwest Major Case Squad has been activated on several cases over the last year. These cases have included missing persons, suspicious deaths, and violent assaults. The Major Case Squad holds monthly meetings to bring each agency together to share information about crimes patterns and problems in the agency’s jurisdiction.

Bates County Sheriff News Release
On 1/21/14 the Bates County Sheriff’s Office requested Butler Fire and Butler Police to assist at the Law Enforcement Center. The request was made because of smoke located in one of the inmate pods. The inmates in that pod were evacuated to another part of the Law Enforcement Center. The Butler Police Officers were requested to assist in preparations in evacuating all the inmates from the building should the need have been determined appropriate.
With assistance of the Butler Fire Department it was determined the source of the smoke was from a motor that had become faulty in the furnace that supplied heat to that inmate pod. There was no actual fire found inside the jail. The faulty motor will be replaced later today. The inmates have been returned to their cells and the Law Enforcement Center is back to running as normal.
Sheriff Anderson would like to thank the Members of the Butler Fire Department and the Butler Police Department for their quick response and willingness to help.
