Bates County Sheriff’s Office Press Release

On April 16th the Bates County Sheriff’s Office made a vehicle stop on 52 Hwy and Rice Road.   During the stop the passenger came back with warrants out of Jasper County Missouri. The driver then gave the Deputy consent to search the vehicle for narcotics.

As the Deputy opened the glove box he noticed plastic bags stuffed under the dash. The Deputy then pulled a bag out and observed it to contain a green leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana. He also observed additional bags behind the glove box. Both the driver and passenger were placed into custody and transported to the Bates County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle was taken to the Sheriff’s Office garage where multiple bags were recovered from under the dash of the car.

During the search approximately 40, 1 gram containers of marijuana wax bars were recovered, approximately 2 grams of liquid hash were recovered, approximately 184 grams of hydroponic marijuana were recovered, one marijuana chocolate caramel bite cookie was recovered and approximately $4300 in cash was recovered. Total seizure was worth approximately $15,000.00 street value.

The two subjects were native to the Jasper County Missouri area and had been living in Colorado for the last year. According to the two subjects they had rented the vehicle in Colorado on Saturday and left the Aurora Colorado area on Sunday. They came home and spent a few days in the Joplin area before heading to Kansas City. After they planned a stop in Kansas City they were reportedly returning to Colorado. Reportedly the purpose of the trip was to traffic narcotics to multiple locations in Missouri.

“Marijuana wax is a new find in our area.” says Sheriff Anderson. “In my research marijuana wax is a product made from a process where marijuana, butane, cold water and other chemicals are mixed in a zero vacuum process that extracts the resin glands from the marijuana plant. The resin glands contain the THC and it forms a waxy substance. That wax substance has an almost pure THC content that ranges from 80 to 90 percent”

The process in making the marijuana wax is very dangerous and if done improper creates an explosion causing injury to those who attempt to perform the process.

Sheriff Anderson says, “Marijuana in the 70’s had a THC content of 5 to 7 percent, today we are seeing marijuana with a THC content of 20 to 30 percent. Now we are seeing marijuana wax with 80 to 90 percent. Users of the wax are reportedly having severe reactions to such a high THC exposure that includes loss of consciousness and hallucinations.”

The two men who were arrested were identified as Joseph Kelly Wells, 11/3/90 and Zachary Brent Easson, 9/1/90. Both have been charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. Bonds were set at $25,000.00 cash or surety.
