Two men have been charged in the June 4th homicide in Peculiar MO.
In a joint news conference Monday Morning, Cass County Prosecutor Teresa Hensley and Cass County Sheriff Dwight Diehl announced that Mathew Volland and Tyler Smallwood have been charged with Murder 1st Degree and Armed Criminal Action in the June 4th homicide of Forrest D. Fuller, 25 of Peculiar. Fuller’s body was found on Wednesday, June 4th in the Wills Cemetery on South Thorngrove Road in rural Peculiar. Their bond has been set at $500,000 cash only for each defendant. Mathew Volland is currently in the Cass County Jail and Tyler Smallwood in in Dodge City Kansas awaiting extradition.
In the probable cause statement the investigation revealed that Fuller had sustained multiple gunshot wounds primarily to his arms and torso. A total of six (6) .22 caliber spent casings and one (1) live round of .22 caliber ammunition were recovered from the scene of the shooting.
Volland and Smallwood arranged to meet Forrest Fuller at Wills Cemetery due to a telephone call between Ms. Kyle Brown and Mr. Fuller within minutes of when Mr. Fuller is believed to have been murdered. The meeting was to engage in a physical altercation between Fuller, Volland and Smallwood.
The probable cause statement further stated the firearm used in the murder of Mr. Fuller was taken to a location at or near 8803 E. 99th street in Kansas City MO and buried on the property. Investigators responded to the Kansas City property and the weapon was located. It has been identified as a 22. Caliber Ruger model 1-22 rifle which had been reported as stolen in a residential burglary that occurred in rural Peculiar on March 20, 2014.
Sheriff Diehl stated Cass County Deputies and the Metro Squad have logged over 1,200 total hours on the investigation of 98 leads, 40 interviews and the execution of 17 search warrants. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
