The Missouri State Highway Patrol, reminds Missouri’s travelers to make safety part of their Labor Day weekend. Use seat belts when traveling in any kind of vehicle and life jackets when on a Missouri lake, river, or stream.
The 2014 counting period for the Labor Day holiday will be from 6 p.m., Friday, August 29, through 11:59 p.m., Monday, September 1.

Check your vessel’s navigation lights before heading out at night, and be sure to have spare bulbs on board. Avoid overloading your boat with too many passengers, and observe Missouri’s nighttime speed limit of 30 miles per hour on the water.

BUTLER, Mo – Every Wednesday morning when Brooke McGuire and Erin Wise walk into the basement of the Ohio Street United Methodist Church they realize that what began as a dream, 5 recipes from home and $200 has become a reality. That reality is Wednesday’s “Bowl of Soup”.
Every Wednesday morning, 5 – 8 volunteer ladies meet in the basement of the Ohio Street United Methodist Church and begin making the “soup of the day.” The soup is delivered to area residents so they will have a hot meal that day and also a little extra for dinner that evening.
Delivery the first week was 10 people and has grown to approximately 50 deliveries. The need for volunteers has also grown and they are seeking individuals who would be able to donate approximately 2 hours each Wednesday. Volunteers and cooks meet each Wednesday for everyone to share a bowl of soup before it’s delivered. Vehicles are loaded by approximately 11:30am and each volunteer has their delivery list with approximately 4 stops.
While on the surface it may seem they are only delivering soup, but in reality they are delivering a human touch, a helping hand and a smile to someone who needs it.
If you are interested in volunteering to deliver on Wednesday or make a contribution, call the Ohio Street United Methodist Church at 660-679-4384.

Jefferson City, Mo. — Secretary of State Jason Kander announced a statewide recount of Constitutional Amendment 1, which appeared on Missouri’s August 5th primary election ballot, has been requested.
Kander’s office has created a webpage (www.sos.mo.gov/elections/Amendment1) to make the recount process more transparent and accessible to Missourians. The page will be updated daily at 3 p.m. to show the recount schedule established by the local election authorities, each local election authority’s report of findings, and a summary of recount results. The office will also train a team of staff members that can be dispatched throughout the state if assistance is requested. Per state statute, the recount will be supervised and certified by the secretary of state’s office no later than September 15.
“My goal is to set the standard for an open, transparent and fair recount process,” Kander said. “Recounts are in place to both ensure the integrity of elections and give Missourians confidence in the results, which is why I put an emphasis on new transparency measures.”
According to state law (RSMo 115.601), recounts are not automatically triggered, but must be requested by a registered voter whose position on the ballot question was defeated. Statewide races are only eligible for a recount when results are separated by less than one half of one percent of total votes cast. Of 996,672 votes cast on Constitutional Amendment 1, there were 499,581 “yes” votes and 497,091 “no” votes, with a difference of 0.24 percent.
The recount was requested by Wes Shoemyer on behalf of Missouri’s Food for America. Constitutional Amendment 1 will be represented by Dan Kleinsorge on behalf of Missouri Farmers Care.
Local election authorities will determine the date and time for recounts to take place in their respective counties, and a bipartisan team of election judges will conduct the process. Media may be present to observe the proceedings.

“We couldn’t do programs like this without the generous support of the community,” added Platt. “We are just the facilitators, the businesses and community members should be proud of what this means to these kids and the opportunity and memories that they provided 91 children.”

BUTLER, Mo – Starting September 2 on Tuesday and Thursday after school, the chatter and energy of 75-80 kids will fill the Butler Youth Center at the old high school. This many children creates a need for basic supplies that is difficult to keep up with. Kelly Stark, manager of the Youth Center, says that the Center begins each year with the basics needed to operate. “But that many kids quickly deplete the supplies that we have on hand,” adds Stark.” “Just think what basic supplies you need for a family of 5 and then multiply that by 15!”
The Center, which operates totally on free will donations, needs the help of the community and businesses. “While there is a constant need for financial donations to help pay our staff, there are many other ways you can help,” says Stark.
Meals at the center are currently sponsored by Sonic, Casey’s, McDonalds, the Lutheran Church ladies and Cheryl Stevens. There are still three nights a months that could use a sponsor. If your organization, business or even an individual is interested, contact Mrs. Stark.
The Center has some specific needs that include:
Paper products such as paper plates, napkins, paper towels, toilet paper and plastic silverware. We go through over 200 plates, napkins and silverware items a week! The center does not need cups.
Kitchen Supplies including aluminum foil, gallon and quart ziplock bags, storage containers.
Cleaning supplies including dish soap, hand soap, hand sanitizer, sponges, dish cloths, towels and trash bags.
Arts and Crafts Supplies. The major needs are construction paper, art paper, card stock, water color paper, water colors, acrylic paints(in bottles), markers, paint brushes, Elmer’s glue and scotch tape. In addition, we could use foam art shapes and sheets. Art beads and jewelry making supplies are very popular with the children and they are also very expensive. Stark noted, “A great donation is inexpensive costume jewelry that has beads. We cut the strings and put those in containers for the kids to make their own jewelry.” Polymer clays, stickers, foam trays, adhesive magnets, and many other craft items are also great. Sidewalk chalk is also great fun on sunny days.
Game supplies. Board games, kick balls, plastic bats and balls, basketballs, Nerf footballs, soccer balls, hula hoops, small balls you can hold in your hand. We could also use working electronic games. Currently we have a working Nintendo 64, a Game Cube, and a Play Station.(All older models). Donated games must be rated for general public or youth.
Food for the Center. Fresh fruits and vegetables, cookies, crackers, peanut butter crackers, peanut butter, cheese, canned cream of chicken and chicken noodle soup, microwave popcorn and chips are always needed.
Donations for the Center can be dropped off at the Center on Tuesdays from 3:00-5:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 1:30 -5:00 p.m. The Center is located in the Old Butler High Building on East Pine Street. In addition to these needs, donations are always appreciated. These can be mailed to BCYAC, Inc. P.O Box #466, Butler, MO 64730. BCYAC, Inc. is a 5013c, not-for-profit organization and financial donations are tax deductible.
VERNON COUNTY, Mo – Thousands of dollars, explosives, stolen property, over a half pound of crystal meth, and more than 40 guns were seized during a large scale investigation involving two search warrants this month. According to a press release from the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, approximately 255 grams of what is believed to be crystal meth was seized during one of the search warrants making this one of the largest seizures of crystal meth in Vernon County.
According to Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher, his office began investigating a drug operation along with agents from the CNET Drug Task Force that lead to tips of stolen firearms and other stolen property. With information collected, the Sheriff’s Office applied for a search warrant in the south part of the county just off of 43 highway that lead to the recovery of stolen firearms, drugs and high grade explosives. Continuing the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office was able to obtain a second search warrant that lead to more stolen firearms and other property, as well as the crystal meth and more than $8,000 in cash. Sheriff Mosher said the type of explosives found were of a commercial grade and his office was able to secure the explosives and turn them over to the Missouri State Highway patrol bomb squad. “Members of our office had just received training this summer on identifying certain types of explosives and was able to quickly determine how to safely remove them from the building and turn them over to the Highway Patrol” said Mosher.
According to the press release, at least a half dozen of the fire arms had already been identified as stolen from Vernon County, and St. Clair County, and investigators are still working to identify the others, “many of the reports we take of stolen firearms do not have serial numbers for the guns when reported so it takes time to track them down, but we are working with the ATF to try and identify when they were sold and then start tracking them down from there” said Mosher.
Names from the first search warrant have not been released due to the continuing investigation, but a warrant was issued for Mark Bogart 33, of Nevada, involving the second search warrant charging him with a class A Felony for drug trafficking, a class C Felony for receiving stolen property, and a class C Felony for maintain a public nuisance. Bogart is currently being held in the Vernon County Jail on a $100,000 cash only bond.
Sheriff Mosher said the amount of drugs taken off the streets will make a large impact on the drug sales in Vernon County, “this was a tremendous amount of crystal meth to have in a county this size and will definitely make a dent in the amount of meth being distributed throughout our county” Mosher said. The Sheriff also said returning stolen property to its owners is one of the most gratifying parts of the job.
