Halloween is a Dangerous Night for Impaired Driving

JEFFERSON CITY – From downtown costume parties to back road bonfires, many celebrations will likely include alcohol. Make your plans for this year’s Halloween fun, but keep in mind that one of the best choices you can make is to drive sober or designate a sober driver to get you home safely.

With an increased number of impaired drivers on the road and an increase in pedestrian traffic as children treat-or-treat, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration classifies Halloween as a statistically dangerous night for impaired driving. That danger can be prevented if drivers just plan ahead.

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety recommends these simple tips for a safe Halloween:

• Before the Halloween festivities begin, plan a way to safely get home at the end of the night.

• Always designate a sober driver.

• If you’ve been drinking, take a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.

• Walking impaired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Designate a sober friend to walk you home.

• If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement.

• If you know someone who is about to drive or ride impaired, take their keys and help them make safe travel arrangements to where they are going.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

BATES COUNTY, Mo – As the school year continues, children are sometime infected and carriers of diseases they are unaware of. Parents need to be aware the prevention and treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease.

Prevention

• There is no vaccine to protect against the viruses that cause hand, foot, and mouth disease.

• A person can lower their risk of being infected by washing hands often with soap and water, especially after changing diapers and using the toilet.

• Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces and soiled items, including toys.

• Avoiding close contact such as kissing, hugging, or sharing eating utensils or cups with people with hand, foot, and mouth disease.

• If a person has mouth sores, it might be painful to swallow. However, drinking liquids is important to stay hydrated. If a person cannot swallow enough liquids, these may need to be given through an IV in their vein.

Treatment

There is no specific treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease. However, some things can be done to relieve symptoms, such as:

• Taking over-the-counter medications to relieve pain and fever (Caution: Aspirin should not be given to children.)

• Using mouthwashes or sprays that numb mouth pain

• Persons who are concerned about their symptoms should contact their health care provider.

Items Needed to Help People Keep Warm this Winter

BATES COUNTY, Mo – You can make a difference and help keep people warm this winter.

Chief Jack Whitehorn is once again collecting blankets, quilts, warm clothes and toys for children which will be taken to the Quapaw Indian tribe in Oklahoma. Each year Chief Whitehorn selects a different tribe to help keep warm in the winter.

This year in addition to warm items, he is asking for canned food which will be used for Christmas dinner. If you would like to help those less fortunate than you, collect your items, put them in a strong, heavy duty trash bag, take them to the New Xpress in Butler where Chief Whitehorn will collect them.

The collection deadline is the first week of December so all deliveries will make it in time for Christmas. Help keep someone warm this winter.
