Clinton Police Department

On Sunday night at 11:29, Clinton Police were dispatched to the 1500 block of North Second in reference to an armed robbery


that had taken place. Upon arrival, officers contacted the victim who stated that while he was gathering aluminum cans from dumpsters in the area of the nearby USA Inn, he observed two males and a female near a white car on the south side of the motel. He stated that one man was on another man’s shoulders and he was looking into the gutters and on the rooftop.


The victim offered them the use of a flashlight which they refused. A short time later, while in the area of Pizza Hut, the victim observed the vehicle driving around the area and then disappear southbound on Second Street. While looking in the dumpster at Pizza Hut, he was approached by a white male in a mask who pointed a semi automatic pistol at him with a laser sight and demanded that he produce identification.

The victim took his wallet out and when he did, the masked man grabbed it and ran to the area of a nearby grain elevator where the subject met up with another subject who he called out to. The victim stated that a female voice was heard answering the masked subject. The subjects then passed from view.


Further investigation at the scene and interviews conducted by Clinton Police Detectives resulted in the two robbery suspects being identified as 26 year old Adam Oniel Powell and 20 year old Bethani Krystine Patterson both of Joplin. Police took Patterson into custody in the area of the USA Inn approximately 2 hours after the robbery. Powell was located at a residence in the 500 block of E. Lincoln Street around 11:00 A.M. Monday morning. Powell bolted from the rear of the residence and ran south pursued by Clinton Police Officers and Henry County Sheriff’s Deputies. He was taken into custody in the back yard of a residence in the 500 Block of E. Green Street.


Both Powell and Patterson were incarcerated in the Henry County Detention Center on 24 hour investigation of 1st degree robbery. Police also arrested 63 year old Phillip Edwin Hicks at the scene of Powell’s arrest for interfering with the arrest of Powell.
