AG Koster Alerts Consumers to Change eBay Login Information Following Breach

Jefferson City, Mo. – Attorney General Chris Koster advised Missourians to change user ID and password information on eBay accounts after the company’s announcement last week acknowledging a breach of user data. According to the company, the breach included loss of full names of customers, their email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and user IDs and passwords.

“Anyone who has an eBay account should immediately change their login information rather than wait for notice from the company,” said Koster. “This is the most immediate step Missouri consumers can take to minimize the impact on the security of personally identifiable information.”

Koster also warned Missourians to be on the lookout for phishing emails from scammers seeking to exploit the breach to commit additional data theft. While emails asking for financial or other personal information may appear to be from eBay, the company will only send email stating that the user should change their login information. EBay will not email or telephone customers seeking private information.

Koster encouraged consumers to be vigilant in monitoring their eBay and PayPal accounts for signs of unauthorized activity. Missouri consumers who suspect unauthorized activity should contact the Missouri Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 800-392-8222 or file a complaint online. Consumers who experience fraud on their accounts are encouraged to immediately contact the Hotline or complete an online form.

Missing Children from Vernon County

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office is looking for two missing juveniles that may be with their mother Kelly Otter, a parole absconder. A bolo was sent to law enforcement state wide and to surrounding areas in an attempt to locate Otter and the Children. Summers here - watch out for ticks

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -

Summertime is hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking time. It also is tick time. The Missouri Department of Conservation reminds those visiting conservation areas to take time to prevent tick bites.

Ticks can transmit diseases, including ehrlichiosis, tularemia, anaplasmosis, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI). The risk of contracting these illnesses is small but serious, so it is worth taking a few simple precautions to avoid them.

Protective clothing is the first line of defense against ticks. When outdoors, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and boots with pants tucked into socks or boots. Rubber bands, blousing bands, or tape can be used to secure the cuffs of your pants.

Once indoors, conduct a thorough tick check and shower as soon as possible to remove any unattached ticks. Tumble clothes in a dryer on high heat to kill remaining ticks before washing your clothing.

Insect repellents also reduce the risk of being bitten. Products containing DEET are most effective. Apply DEET-based repellent on exposed skin and clothing. Use a product with at least a 20-percent concentration. Lower concentrations do not repel lone-star ticks, Missouri’s most common ticks. Essential oils and natural products are not registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for tick repellency. Be sure to follow label instructions to ensure safety and best results.

Products containing permethrin can be applied to clothing and equipment but not directly to skin. Garments must be allowed to dry thoroughly before wearing. These products kill ticks rather than merely repelling them. Again, be sure to follow label directions.

Most tick-transmitted diseases are not transferred to the host until the tick has been feeding for some time. The earlier the tick is located and removed, the less the chance of being infected with a tick-borne disease. When you are active outdoors, never allow more than a few hours to pass without a tick inspection.

Remove any attached ticks immediately. Proper removal is important, because improper removal can increase the likelihood of infection. Follow these steps to remove a tick that is already attached.

• Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible. If you use your fingers, cover them with tissue or rubber gloves. Use only as much pressure as necessary to avoid forcing the tick’s stomach contents into the bite.

• Remove the tick with a firm outward movement. Never jerk or twist the tick when removing it.

• After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and water.

Watch for symptoms of tick-borne disease in the days and weeks following a tick bite. These include any unusual rash and unexplained flu-like symptoms, including fever, severe headaches, body aches, and dizziness.

Symptoms of tick-borne diseases often are mild, but they should not be ignored. If you know you’ve been bitten by a tick and any of the above symptoms appear, consult a doctor and mention the recent tick bite.Prompt treatment with antibiotics can prevent serious illness or even death.

Troop A Prepares For The 2014 Memorial Day Holiday Weekend

Captain Robert L. Powell, commanding officer of Troop A, Lee’s Summit, MO, announces upcoming plans for Troop A officers to participate in Operation C.A.R.E. and 20-Mile Trooper enforcement programs over the 2014 Memorial Day weekend.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) during the long holiday weekend. This means every available officer will be on the road enforcing traffic laws and assisting motorists.

Additionally, Troop A officers will be conducting a 20-Mile Trooper project on Interstates 70, 35, 29, 49, and 470, and U.S. Highway 50 in the Troop A area on May 23, 2014 and May 26, 2014. During this enforcement program, troopers will be assigned to 20-mile intervals in an effort to maximize visibility with a goal of reducing traffic crashes over the holiday weekend.

“Memorial Day is typically one of the heaviest traveled holidays in Missouri,” stated Captain Powell. “I would like to urge all motorists to make sure safe driving is a part of your plans. Make sure everyone is wearing a seat belt, and never drink and drive. Should you be celebrating the holiday on the water, I want to remind everyone to ensure they are wearing an approved life jacket while in a vessel and don’t operate a vessel while drinking.”

In support of “The Drive To ZERO Highway Deaths,” the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.

Nevada Habilitation Center Kitchen Equipment Donated To The City

[Nevada, MO.] Valuable kitchen equipment from Nevada Habilitation Center is being donated to the City of Nevada to be used by community groups and the vocational school. The transfer of these items occurred through the collaboration with Senator Ed. Emery, Representative Randy Pike and the Department of Mental Health and the Office of Administration.

A community group, Healthy Nevada, inquired about the unused kitchen equipment and brought it to the attention of Sen. Emery and Rep. Pike. Representatives from Healthy Nevada, the Nevada Vocational School, and Heartland Behavioral Hospital presented a proposal to their legislators outlining the use of the state equipment for the betterment of the Nevada community. Sen. Emery and Rep. Pike then in turn presented the proposal to the Department of Mental Health and the Office of Administration to donate the pieces to the City of Nevada. Representative Pike said, “It was a win – win opportunity to be able to keep this valuable equipment in the Nevada area and use it for these important community groups.”

Healthy Nevada community coordinator, Kelly Ast, says that the kitchen equipment will be divided among Community Outreach, the Nevada Vernon County Farmer’s Market, and the Nevada R-5 school district vocational program.

Community Outreach, the local food pantry is pleased to get the equipment. Barb Long, Community Outreach Coordinator, will be able to store the fresh produce for over 300 families the pantry serves each month. The Farmers Market and vocational school plan to use the equipment as an educational opportunity for students and families through offerings such as cooking classes and demonstrations.

This is the 9th year for the Pool Pals Program sponsored by the Bates County Youth Advocacy Council. This program provides season pool passes to children who either cannot afford to swim or they have special needs or considerations.

According to Jeremy Platt, President of the BCYAC, INC., “Last year we were able to buy season passes for 76 children. This program is successful due to the generosity of businesses, organizations and the people of Bates County.”

Bates County Youth Advocacy Council gathers donations for the pool passes and then provides them to the children in the community. A list of children is compiled and the council works its way down the list as the money comes in. Various groups give the council the names of these children.

BCYAC takes any donation amount, whether you want to donate $5 or sponsor an entire family. Any donation would be appreciated. If you would like to make a donation to the Pool Pal Program mail it to:

Thank you for supporting the youth of our area.

Finish Line Almost in Sight

Thanks to the generosity of people in our area the Pool Pal Program has the finish line almost in sight.

To date, 62 children will be able to enjoy swimming in the Butler Pool this summer but there are still children on the list that may not have that opportunity. With the pool opening on Saturday, May 24th the hot days of summer will quickly be here.

If you haven’t taken the time to make a donation to this worthy cause, now is the time to help out underprivileged children in our area that would not otherwise have the opportunity to go to the pool this year.

The Bates County Youth Advocacy Council is asking for your help to reach their goal for 2014 of providing a pass to all the children on their list, and they can only do that with your help.
