Eat Well Be Well with Diabetes Classes

In cooperation with On My Own, University of Missouri Extension will be offering Eat Well Be Well with Diabetes from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., August 11, September 8, October 13 and November 10. Classes will be held at On My Own, 428 E. Highland Avenue.


This four-class series is designed to provide the participant with practical information and skills needed to self-manage diabetes and promote optimal health. Anyone who has diabetes or pre-diabetes as well as family members of those with diabetes can benefit from these classes.


Session one is an introduction to diabetes self-management. Participants will discuss basic information about diabetes, causes for blood sugar highs and lows, and how different foods affect blood sugar.


In session two, participants identify carbohydrate foods and discuss foods that cause blood sugar to rise. Fiber is one carbohydrate food that will be discussed. Participants will learn about the impact of fiber on blood sugar. Class members will experience menu planning using the plate method.


Session three allows participants an opportunity to practice carbohydrate counting and discuss ways to eat less.


Session four focuses on what the person with diabetes needs to know to successfully manage their diabetes.


Participants will receive diabetes-friendly recipes and will sample some of the instructor’s favorites in each of the classes.
