Canoe Trip Turns Deadly for 12-year-old Pleasanton, KS Boy on Elk River

McDONALD COUNTY, Mo. –

A canoe trip on a McDonald County river turned deadly for a 12-year-old boy from Pleasanton, Kansas.


The incident occurred on the Elk River, three miles west of Pineville at around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Water Patrol Division, a swift current washed Michael Cox’s canoe into a log causing the canoe to capsize. Officials said Cox was pinned under the water for approximately 30 minutes.


Cox was transported to a Joplin hospital, where he was pronounced dead.


Nobody else was injured, according to the Patrol.
