VERNON COUNTY, Mo – Two people were taken into custody early Thursday morning following an undercover surveillance operation conducted by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office in an attempt to located stolen property.
According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, Detectives received information that a possible suspect involving stolen property was trying to collect a reward for returning the property to the owner. A briefcase belonging to a car dealer that contained over 30 vehicle titles and keys had recently been reported stolen. When the Sheriff’s Office received new information they set up a surveillance detail in Nevada around 12:30 am Thursday.
According to Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher, undercover deputies followed a suspect on foot for a short time and then using unmarked cars, was able to locate the vehicle they believed contained the stolen brief case around 1:30 am driving through Nevada. “We wanted to avoid a pursuit if at all possible so we trailed the vehicle until it stopped at the Casey’s store on Osage and were able to surround the car before anyone could get out” said Mosher. The Sheriff said Deputies in fully-marked patrol cars were staging several blocks away, waiting for the right time to move in. “I’m glad no one was hurt and we were able to take the suspect into custody without anyone getting hurt.”
A Sheriff’s Office K-9 was able to locate what is believed to be methamphetamines during the incident. The names of the suspects have not been released pending the filing of formal charges. The briefcase containing the car titles was released back to the owner late Thursday morning.
