Mayor Don Malan called the May 6th meeting to order and approval was given to the minutes of the regular session and closed session minutes of April 15th and approved the bills.
Two travel/training requests were approved from the Butler Fire Department, one to attend the Annual Emergency Management Conference and the second for personnel to attend live fire training in burn trailer which will be credited toward firefighter certification.
In Committee Reports the Personnel Committee reported they decided not to extend the Code Enforcement Officer’s hours from 30 hours to 40.
The City Owned Facilities Committee reported to Council they met with Mike Taranto from Solar Shade USA regarding the Spec building and it was decided it was too costly a venture at this time.
Parks and Recreation Committee reported the prices at the Butler Pool will stay the same for 2014 with the pool opening on May 24th.
The Zoning Board of Adjustment approved a resolution regarding an application from Brandy and Jerret Wheatley for a zoning variance/conditional use permit which will allow the operation of a daycare at 909 N. Fulton Street.
The Council approved a termite bid for the airport from J&S Pest Control for $3,500 and also gave approval for bathroom floors remodeling for a bid of $2,262.75. Council was also informed that a $600 donation towards the remodel would be coming from the Butler Rotary Club.
Trent Diehl, Director of Public Works, asked the Council to approve the purchase of an additional 1060 feet of 10” ductile iron pipe to finish the replacement of the water line on South High Street from Nursery Street to Ft. Scott. This water line needs to be replaced due to multiple water main breaks and constant complaints of rusty water. All of this is in preparation of South High getting an asphalt overlay. The low bid was from HD Supply and Ferguson Enterprises for a total of $26,212.04. The request was approved.
Jim Wheatley, Code Enforcement Officer reminds everyone needs to have their lawns mowed. Maximum height is 7 inches and tickets will be going out next week if your lawn does not comply with the maximum height requirement.
Brian Phillips brought up the speed limit surrounding the city park and the soccer field needs to be reduced from 25 MPH to 15MPH due to the number of children in that area. Police Chief Randy Beshore said this would not be a problem; the original speed limit had been 15 MPH but was raised by the Council to 25MPH when complaints arose from tickets given for speeding in the area. The Council approved the speed limit reduction for the area from South High to Meadowlane to Parkview.
Corey Snead, Accounts Payable Clerk for the City of Butler representing the administrative staff, requesting a donation of $50 to match the $50 collected from the staff to help purchase Butler Elementary PTSO shirts for all 630 students. The Council would be recognized on the back of the shirts. City Clerk Casey Koehn “passed the hat” to Council members and more than the requested $50 was collected and all money will be used in the effort of the PTSO to purchase shirts.
