About the site: The Battle of Mine Creek was one of the largest cavalry battles in the Civil War and a major battle fought in Kansas. On October 25, 1864, approximately 2,500 Union troops attacked and defeated an estimated 7,000 Confederates commanded by Major General Sterling Price. After the battle, Union forces pursued Price’s army into Missouri, Arkansas, and Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma), and ended the Confederate threat to Kansas.

The Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site is one of 16 historic sites operated by the Kansas Historical Society, a state agency.
