MARSHFIELD, Mo. – The Marshfield Fire Department has confirmed sad news this morning. Lt. Matthew Blankenship, a firefighter in critical condition from injuries sustained while fighting a house fire in Niangua, died this morning around 4:35 a.m.
According to the fire department, Blankenship and another firefighter were trapped inside the home as they attempted to extinguish the fire on July 13.
Conditions inside the structure quickly deteriorated and they became trapped. Lt. James Lannan, the firefighter helping Blankenship inside the house, escaped with minor injuries.
Blankenship was rescued by other firefighters and immediately transported to the hospital, where he has been held since the incident.
A fund has been established for Lt. Blankenship’s family, which has already raised $12,465. Although the fire department insurance will cover most, if not all, of the hospital expenses, many other expenses may not be.
Members of the fire department have also organized a benefit to be held on July 27th at the Marshfield Fire Station and T-shirts are being sold on the fire department’s website for $20.
