JEFFERSON CITY, Mo - Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster is among 49 Attorneys General calling for Congress to amend a federal law to fight prostitution and child sex trafficking.
In a letter to key members of Congress, the Attorneys General advocate for the amendment of the Communications Decency Act to provide criminal jurisdiction to state and local prosecutors.
Koster says the act was drafted before the internet became a player in these cases. He says courts have interpreted certain provisions of the act to provide immunity from state prosecution to online classified ad sites.
"To keep up with changing technology, federal law needs to be modernized to provide local prosecutors the tools to strike back against those who promote sexual exploitation," Koster said through a press release.
"As a former prosecutor, I am familiar with the sad fact that many of those engaged in prostitution are underage and abused."
Local prosecutors say prostitution solicitations have mainly moved online. They report Backpage.com generates more than $3 million per month.
