Missouri House Approves Helmet Law Repeal

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. –

The Missouri House has approved a bill to unbuckle the state’s mandatory motorcycle helmet law.

The House voted 95-57 to make wearing a helmet optional for motorcycle riders aged 21 and above. It also requires riders to carry proof of medical insurance covering at least $50,000 in coverage for injuries.

State Rep. Eric Burlison, (R) Springfield, sponsored the legislation. “You’re a responsible adult, it’s not our responsibility to tell you what you can and cannot do as long as you’re not harming me then I think that’s what this… where our laws should be intended is to make sure you and your freedom is not harming my freedom,” Burlison said during House floor debate.

State Rep. Keith Frederick, (R) Rolla, spoke out against the bill. “My concern is offloading the expense to the tax payers, I don’t have anything against somebody else’s freedom but I think there is a point where your freedom to swing your arms ends at the tip of my nose and if it’s financial impact that our tax payers are going to have I think we need to stand in that gap and prevent them from having that financial impact,” he said.

The bill now goes to the Senate.
