BATES COUNTY, Mo – Last summer, Sheriff Anderson started a program for our Inmate Workers. Under the Supervision of our Inmate Operations Coordinator, Inmates were allowed to plant a garden in our vacant lot on east Dakota street in Butler. The inmates had to maintain the garden each week by weeding, watering and harvesting the produce. All of the produce that came out of the garden was given to the Senior Center here in Butler.
Since the garden was such a success last summer, Sheriff Anderson decided to make this a permanent program for our Inmate Workers. So far this spring, Inmates have been tilling, planting and weeding the garden. They have planted onions and potatoes so far. Next week the inmates will be planting the rest of the garden that will include cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, green beans, corn, zucchini, okra, radishes, eggplant, watermelon, squash and cantaloupe. All of the produce from the garden will be given to local charities.
Sheriff Anderson said, “This is a small way that our County Inmates are able to give back to our community.” This also teaches the Inmates a skill that they may have not known how to do before.
