House of Representatives Capitol Report / Randy Pike

JEFFERSON CITY, MO— The Missouri House of Representatives and Senate reconvened Wednesday, September 10th for the 2014 Veto Session. Following is a summary of three of the Bills we voted on. Bill information is listed on the Missouri House website: http://www.house.mo.gov

The Missouri House overrode Governor Nixon’s veto on Senate Bill 656, which was gun legislation, that allows anyone with a concealed carry permit to openly carry guns, even if local ordinances prohibit it, and requires creation of a training program for teachers who could be allowed to carry guns in schools. The bill also lowers the age at which a person can obtain a concealed carry permit from 21 to 19.

One of the most controversial measures was regarding abortion. The Bill changed the wait time for Missouri women to have an abortion from 24 to72 hours. The governor vetoed that bill, and the Missouri House of Representatives voted to override that veto. Missouri now has one of the strictest abortion laws in the nation.

The attempt to override Governor Jay Nixon’s veto of Agriculture legislation narrowly failed in the Missouri House by one vote.
